____Chillmist patted the soft leather cover of the book he’d finished reading that morning and placed it gently on the shelf.

____"There, back with your friends. You were very entertaining! Imagine, a world where two-legged beasts could study science and go to the moon! I don’t think I could ever write something so creative.” He shook his head with a grin on his face.

____He went back to his desk and noted more information on subject matter on the book’s catalog card, copied it for an author card, and then made another copy for the subject files. Always three cards so anyone could check the catalog by subject, by author, and by title alphabetically. It was satisfying to file the cards and know that it was now possible for other dragons to find the fanciful tale and enjoy it as he had! It would not wallow on some shelf and collect dust, forgotten and lost. Though it also meant their work at the library was never done. He looked around and saw that everyone was working hard, no need for him to tell them what needed doing! Books were being shelved, checked out, repaired - the quiet hum of library efficiency was all around him. He breathed deeply and smelled the oiled woodwork, the distinct smell of parchment, vellum, and leather, and exhaled in deep contentment.

____Time to work on his own writing now. His stomach fluttered uncomfortably.

____Glimmergust had requested he add his own notes on himself into the Lair Journals that detailed the lives of the dragons that called this place home. Chillmist was nervous about it, having read some great entries by others - it was wonderful to get to know some of these dragons so much better after reading about their past and how they came to work here. It was a casual History of their life stories, and he’d avoided writing his part for a long time. How could his life be interesting to anyone else? He didn’t even think he could write it well, but Glimmergust insisted he get to it.

____I was born in the cold lands of Ice Flight, and although I love my parents, it was a rough life for me among the ice floes and the windswept icefields. What I always loved was hearing the stories around Lair’s main fireplace at night.

____Usually it was the elders of the Lair that told us stories of the deities and stories of great battles of the past, but sometimes a Messenger would come and agree to tell us wonderful stories of other places, far off lands of other flights. I was especially fond of the WInd Flight Messengers. They had the most exciting stories and made me realize there was so much more out there. I realized, watching them fly away with our letters, that I didn’t have to stay. I could leave and find a new home. But where would I go?

____Meanwhile I studied under the Lair’s Scholar and Writer, cataloging his book collection after I was frustrated at the disorder of his shelves and the haphazard way of finding things. He knew where everything was, but no one else did. I developed a catalog system that everyone at the lair loved, and my Master grudgingly agreed was something he should have done ages ago. He then taught me how to care for the books and scrolls, repair and copy them when repair wasn't possible.

____One day a Messenger took him aside and handed him a letter.

____"I was telling stories of this lair and you to a Fae I met, and she would like to offer you a permanent position in her lair. Please think about it, I think it’s a good fit for you!”

____"You tell stories about us?” I was dumbfounded. Why would anyone want to know about me?

____"Glimmergust has a good idea of what she wants to do, and she needs help doing it. I thought of you. The Messengers on this run all know you are great at cataloging and running the library here, but this is pretty small. Read the letter and see what her big plans really are.”

____I thanked the Messenger for his kindness in thinking of me, and quickly opened the letter. This Lair had wonderful ideas of a large sweeping library, open to the public and containing all the great works of Sorneith and beyond. Beyond? I wondered what craziness I was getting into. She also said she needed a Head Librarian and someone well versed in a Card Catalog. Then I saw her salary offer and almost fainted right there. I had never heard of a librarian getting paid that much!

____I made my plans, said goodbye to my family, and headed off to Wind Flight and Glimmergust’s Lair.

____Chillmist put down the pen and read what he’d written aloud. It sounded horrible, but it was done. He then remembered the day he had met the madcap Fae and vowed to write that story soon. It was a funny story and they had become friends instantly. That might be something others would enjoy reading about!
