Deathseer - Clan Founder

Title: Deathseer, Founder of the Windflight Clan
Personality: Caring, fatherly, dwells on the past
Duty: Clan Council Member
(Note: any hatchling after Diamond is not recognized in Clan lore.)

Mate: No.
Battlebond: Diamond, Wave

Origin: Where did this dragon come from?
Blood (if applicable):

Intent:
To forget about the past, because the past sucked, maybe the future will be better, maybe. Just maybe.
To take care of his last remaining son as best as he can, and to hand the Clan over to Diamond when he grows older Fulfilled
To rejoice! One of his sons has returned to him! But the other is a Nocturne now. Fair enough, Deathseer changed his breed too. Twice, that is. He's back to a Guardian now.
To admire his new, slightly green wings
To protect the locket around his neck at all costs - the first piece of jewelry he ever acquired. It bears the Windflight Clan's crest, and nobody's ever seen the inside of it.
To continue his Search for his true charge, as Deepsea didn't cut it

Finished geneing June 11th, 2021

Biography:
The great Guardian stood, pride shining in his deep blue eyes, as he gazed at his newly hatched sons. The hatchery walls were lined with paintings of fish and brightly-colored birds of paradise, while a single, moss-lined nest sat in the middle of the room.
At first glance, you couldn’t tell the three were related, Deathseer thought to himself. But they’re all beautiful.
The eldest of the Guardian hatchlings was a vibrant purple with heavily contrasting brown spines, while his brothers were deeper colors, one as black as the darkest depths of the ocean and one almost midnight-blue. All three had the same sparkling blue eyes as their parents - they were the Tidelord’s children, through and through.
“They’ve got your eyes, dear.” a coal-black Guardian slid into the room, followed by two other hatchlings - these were clearly females, as they lacked the beginnings of a beard that all Guardian males bore, and they were visibly older than the new arrivals, at a year old each.
“Ha-ha, Deep.” Deathseer chuckled, and smiled at his mate.
“Are these our brothers and sisters?” one of the females chirped from behind their mother’s leg. This one was a lavender purple, although she had striking black wings.
“Yes, Violet.” their father responded. “Come, say hello, but please be gentle.” he sighed, remembering how easily excited Violet was.

‘Siblings.” Fireball, the other sister, nodded. Her eyes were nearly pure black, although they held a warm gaze.
Their mother, however, did not radiate the same warmth as her family. “Seriously, Death. Look at them. They’ve got your eyes.” Was it just Deathseer, or did he hear a hint of anger in Deepsea’s voice?
“Either way, they’re all adorable.”
“I guess.”
“..guess?” there was a silence from Deathseer before he’d replied. “But.. they’re our-”
“Hmm. You are right.” Deepsea arched her long neck to peer at the hatchlings.
Deathseer sighed. “We can.. talk about that later. But I’m glad you think so. On a better note, names, anyone?”

“Ooh, ooh!” Fireball chimed in from next to her mother. “I like Wave for the purple one. Do you like that, little guy?” The purple Guardian hatchling, who was watching the conversation, let out an agreeable chirp.
“That’s a yes, then.” Violet added.
“Thank you, Fireball. Wave it is for the purple one.” Deathseer gave his nod of approval. “Welcome, Wave.” He leaned forward to touch Wave’s snout.
“May I name the dark one?” their mother said, and didn’t wait for an answer, although Deathseer didn’t object. “Shadowmelter for the black one.”
“That’s a bit ominous.” there was a hint of uneasiness in Deathseer’s voice, but the newly-named Shadowmelter was already trying to say the name, while pointing to himself in the process. “S-shadowmelter!”
Violet giggled, and Wave followed suit. “Looks like you have no choice, dad! Go ahead and name the last one, I’ve got no ideas.”
The perfect name… Deathseer thought to himself for a short while, and noted his final son’s shining blue scales. “Diamond.” he said after a while. “I’ll call him Diamond, for he will grow to be the strongest, most loyal, most handsome son I know.”

*******

“Fireball and I are going fishing!” Deathseer announced. “I think this would be a good experience for her. Unless anyone else would like to come too?”
“No, thanks.” Violet called from another room in the cave. “I’ve been reading this book about the jewelry in different Flights and it’s really interesting.”
“Next time,” Wave said, or Deathseer thought he said, as the purple Guardian was stuffing his mouth with fish from the last hunt as Shadowmelter watched disapprovingly. “I’d love to, but it seems like I have to watch over Wave to make sure he doesn’t explode.”
Diamond approached his father and plopped down in front of him. “Good luck with the hunt,” he told Deathseer. “I’d help, but Mom wants me to- wait, what was it again? Either way, I hate chores.”

“Well then,” Deathseer replied, “I’ll be seeing you all. Wish me luck !” he called as he left the lair entrance with Fireball trailing after him, not knowing what misfortune would meet his children when he returned.

*******

(Read Diamond’s lore for context.)

“We’re back!” Deathseer exclaimed, two sacks slung across his back carrying various fish and even a seal that had strayed too far from the Southern Icefield. Fireball too carried her earnings from this week’s hunt, her eyes shining as they always did.

A sudden cry startled Deathseer. “NO!”
“What was that?” he called.
“It sounded like Diamond!” Fireball added. “And look! There are footprints leading out of here.. (she gestured to the floor) and they’re not Guardian prints! What in Tidelord’s name happened here?”

“Ohhh yes,” came another voice from another room. “Bye-bye, siblings!”
“W-what?” Deathseer nearly dropped his fish in confusion and even horror. “Fireball, wait here while I see what’s going on.” Muscles tensed, Deathseer padded towards a spare room near the back of the lair, where all the commotion seemed to be coming from.
He was not prepared for the sight he saw. Deepsea was standing in the middle of the room with a fresh scar across her cheek and a menacing grin on her face. Next to her and tied to a chair was Diamond, shaking with terror and grief.

Sweat rolled down Deathseer’s sky-blue scales and his eyes were wide with horror as he confronted his mate. “Bye-bye, siblings? Deep, what do you mean? And where are Wave and the other?”
“Gone far away,” cooed the coal-black Guardian, who looked like an insane mess. Deathseer noticed she wielded a knife in her right paw. “I know they were always trying to take over the lair. You don’t have to worry about them anymore.”
“You’re wrong!” Deathseer spat. “Nobody was trying to take over us.” he cried as Deepsea edged towards him, getting ready to raise the knife.
Thinking quickly, Deathseer reached into a pouch and pulled out a tranquilizer dart, usually saved for the toughest of prey. He panicked and fired it, worrying it would miss its target, but Deepsea slumped to the floor, the small green needle poking out of her scales.

“D-dad!” Diamond looked relieved as Deathseer moved to free his son.
“Diamond..” his father’s eyes filled with grief, but a part of him was relieved Diamond was safe. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t there for you. I didn’t know..”

“It’s not your fault. She was so.. private.. that nobody could have known..” Deathseer was surprised that Diamond could be so forgiving to him. He really should have known better…

*******

Wings drooping, Deathseer sat down next to a shocked Fireball and a grieving Diamond. Behind them was the door to what Deathseer had dubbed an asylum, although it wasn’t as protected as what he’d seen in books. It had taken Deathseer a while to explain to his surviving daughter as to what had happened the night before, but he’d managed it in the end.

He was about to surprise them once more. “I can’t take over the power of the lair yet. I’m so sorry.. I should have known better. I’m not the right dragon for the job. You two are going to have to lead us for a while.”
“Dad-” Diamond started.
“I can’t do it yet. This has been too much for me to handle.”
“I miss them.” Fireball sighed.
“I know.” Deathseer hugged his remaining children tightly. “I need to go rest now. These past few days have been terrible. At least you two are here with me.”
With a slight smile, Deathseer, no longer as strong as he used to be, padded away from his children with a single thought.
This is their lair now.
