    One day, as Navarre was about to set out and forage for his mate, busy tending their first nest, he was surprised to find a guardian preparing a meal near the entrance to their lair. She was young-- just old enough to be allowed to leave her home, Navarre had guessed. She seemed passingly surprised that she wasn’t alone, but took it in stride, offering Navarre some herbs she had scrounged up in the desert.
    As they ate, they talked. The guardian’s name was Vaida. She was on her Search and had traveled all the way from the Zephyr Steppes without success. Navarre cautiously offered to put her up for the night, and Vaida simply thanked him for her kindness. She was few with her words, but not out of coldness or ignorance; she was thoughtful and kind beyond her years. Navarre hesitated in his conversation with her. Despite his concerns, he found himself trusting her.
    Navarre lay awake that night, worrying about his first child on the way and about the guardian he had let into the clan. After hours of pointless tossing and turning, he finally chose to wander around the lair and check on things.
    That was when he discovered Vaida had traversed the secret tunnels and security measures to find the Cythera. Immediately he readied himself for attack. She recognized that he had come upon her but did not move to defend herself. Instead, she turned to him and looked him straight in the eyes.
    “What is this?”
    Navarre hesitated. But as he stared her down, he began to soften.
    And he told her.
