SURTR guardian of the hearth | healer | the warmest, softest friend | he/him
ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
▾ In the Sunbeam Ruins, during Sorineth's rebirth festival that crosses all elemental borders every summer, an egg was hatched. Its parents were young, and their first nest only produced a single offspring. That child, named Surtr, shone as bright as the sun, and with nearly as much heat. Perhaps it was the timing of the hatchling's birth, or a blessing of the Lightweaver, that made the young dragon burn so fiercely, but his parents didn't see it as a gift. His fur was unbearably hot to the touch, singing their paws at any attempt to soothe or cool him, and his wings flashed blindingly in the sun. Nobody could get near the child, and he wailed and wailed over the din of the festival. Nobody in the fledgling clan could help Surtr, so with a heavy heart, his parents took him to the borders of the Tangled Wood and left him, hoping the creatures of shadow would claim his life before hunger did.
▾ But Surtr's will to live would not let him lay there and waste away. Leaving tiny pawprints burnt into the grass in his wake, shedding ashes from his smoldering wings, the little dragon stumbled along until he met another lost hatchling- a mirror pup who had been abandoned when her swarm moved camp. She was dark and sharp and cold as ice, everything that Surtr wasn't, and when the two curled up together for safety that first night, neither was hurt by the other's magic. Skadi was thoughtful, grounded, and wickedly intelligent, and her quick, decisive thinking saved Surtr's life many times. As the pair grew, defending each other and slowly learning to control their powers, they decided to found a clan together unlike the ones that had left them for dead. ▾ The Galehart clan was founded in a breezy hollow on the Zephyr Steppes. It was a loose coalition of young dragons who believed nobody should be cast out for aspects of their nature beyond their control. A grizzled old imperial named Odin took Surtr and Skadi under their wing, and was soon joined by Sif, a bogsneak with the ambition and strategic mind to make the progens' dream a reality. In those early days, Sif was power-hungry and selfish, and bullied Surtr and Skadi into exaltation to make her control over the clan absolute. While in the Windsinger's service, Surtr guarded the border between the Steppes and the Emberglow Hearth, and grew close with an aging coatl. There, Surtr learned how to harness his internal flame, and to redirect its solar heat towards healing instead of destruction. When he returned to the Galeharts, it was as a dragon reborn: a warm thrumming heart on gilded wings. ▾ Sif's vision for the Galeharts was a clan of warriors who would ruthlessly defend their borders and thrive on the sale of their hoarded resources. Surtr was determined to reclaim his clan and restore its original vision: a sanctuary for those lost and wandering on the fringes of Sorineth's society. He persuaded Sif to step down by granting her authority over all training and exaltation matters. Here, she could thrive in battle while helping guide young dragons towards the same transformative experience that had made Surtr so mighty. ▾ The Galehart's thrived under Surtr and Skadi's watchful eye, and they became deeply rooted in the Reedcleft Ascent. But the clan was perhaps too prosperous, as they over-developed the pillar they called home, causing the Singing Tower to collapse on itself. Surtr felt called to leave the Zephyr Steppes rather than rebuild, settling instead in Dragonhome, the birthplace of all dragonkind. The Cairnstone Rest is all but abandoned, populated here and there with the remote, deeply entrenched clans of ancient earth dragons who have learned to live alongside its ghosts. Along its Western coast, the Galeharts followed the winds to a rocky bay that had long been forsaken due to its unpredictable weather. Here, they dug their dens, and Surtr's fire warmed stone and sky to make the region more habitable. At the heart of the clan's lair, Surtr's den was built as a vast hearth, hollowed out of the stone and tiled with gold and jasper. Its coals never go cold while Surtr is drowsing among them, and imbued with his magic, they give off sweet, healing curls of smoke. Catching the hearth's scent on a furious breeze, travelers can be assured that there is a safe place to land and good company just around the next cliff.
