CIRRUS

Cirrus was abandoned as a hatchling in the Hewn City, amongst the haunted and abandoned ruins. The tiny gold-throated sparrow that had bonded with him was the only live creature in the ruins with him, though they could hear odd and frightening noises coming from every corner. Terrified and with only a tiny sparrow for company, all Cirrus could do was curl himself up as tightly as possible and cry silently, unheard and forgotten by the female who had hatched him and then decided he wasn't worth keeping.

The little Spiral couldn't make a sound--not just because of fear. He was mute. He couldn't cry for help, but his sparrow friend could. The little bird sat on a branch nearby and sang its little heart out, as loudly as it could, for anyone to hear.

As it so happened, Edge was passing through at that time, during her second journey to the Sunbeam Ruins. She had stopped at the edge of the Hewn City, considering whether she should go around the creepy area or just carry on through it. She heard the sparrow's cries and at first brushed them off as usual birdsong. But after a moment she remembered that birds stayed away from the Hewn City because of the darkness and generally creepy atmosphere. After a moment's hesitation, she decided to check it out.

Exploration into the dark ruins led her to discover the little Spiral, who watched her with frightened eyes as if she were a ghost. She realized that her face was hidden by her burlap hood and pushed it back so the hatchling could see her brightly colored face and her brilliant blue eyes. She was sad as she looked at him, and tried to speak to him, but he wouldn't--or couldn't--reply. He managed to show her that he couldn't speak, after which she offered to take him somewhere safe. He agreed, and she helped him wrap himself securely around her long body. With the sparrow following behind, she took them to the safest place she knew--Carasu's clan in the Ashfall Wastes.
