xxxx The clan celebrated the clutch of two eggs, even though it was a smaller nest than most. It was still spring time, and life was fresh and thriving. Of course any nature clan would be elated for any sign of growth and life. Yet, one egg was especially special.

At first, both eggs looked normal with sprouts of leaves emerging from the top. However, one of the eggs also had a blossom that appeared amongst the leaves. Pink and lush, dragons loved to peer at the egg and wonder what sort of flower would blossom. “Would it be a larkspur? Maybe the hatchling will have a fickle personality.” “What about a caemllia?” “Carnation, for a dragon that’s unforgettable?” “Hyacinth for a playful dragon!” “I hope not a petunia...that means anger...”

When it finally blossomed, it was a soft pink rose – perfect happiness. The rose began to glow, and the mark of the Gladekeeper, in a vibrant pink, rose from it. After a moment, the mark burst into magical glitter that spread all over the clan. “It’s a sign! The Gladekeeper has blessed us with this new hatchling!”

The clan celebrated for days, bringing out a feast that could feed not only their clan, but also dragons from other clans who visited to see the tiny egg and hear of the story of the Gladekeeper’s mark. They were happy to share their joy and to bestow as much kindness on other dragons as they felt was given to them by their deity.

The smaller egg without a flower hatched first, and the hatchling was welcome into the world with love and affection in a sea of cheers as its mother picked her up and held her close. The other egg was more stubborn, and the dragons stared at it, waiting to see the slightest movement… Hushed and holding their breaths, you could even hear a leaf fall with their silence.

One of the petals of the pink rose fell to the nest. Then another. And another. This continued for another hour until only petal was left clinging to the egg. Many dragons were shocked at how the flower was falling apart and felt that the falling petals were a sign of bad luck, an indicator of the blessings and happiness falling away. If all of the petals fell…

At this moment, the egg began to open, like a flower with its petals peeling away. From the egg, a thin spiral’s face peeked out with large green eyes. The last petal from the egg landed on her snout, causing her to sneeze. Everyone laughed at the adorableness of the female hatchling, and it only caused her to give a large smile that appeared to spread to both sides of her face.

That is how Mielikki began her life, with a bright vibrant smile that melted the hearts of the dragons around her, washing away their sadness and fears. Cute and adorable, clanmates smiled when she visited them, which was often as she enjoyed the company of other dragons, whether it was familiar or new faces to the clan. With older dragons, she loved basking in the bright sun, breathing in the scents of her surroundings - the sweet wetness of a recent rainstorm, the scents of the recent harvest, or the pollen that spread from the faces of hundreds of flowers. With the younger dragons, she enjoyed rolling in the grassy hills and plucking flowers from the fields. Admirers loved to make flowered crowns and leis for her to wear.

She was clumsy too though, which prevented her from doing certain activities like flower arrangement (she would scatter them or accidentally ruin their forms), farming (let’s not go into the story of being almost cut by a scythe, buried alive by a mound of mulch, or drowning parts of the crops), gathering (she lost most of the gathered food by the time she returned to the clan)...well, almost everything, to be honest. Mielikki’s job was more to bring happiness to the clan with her kind nature and smiles.

Yet, the clan was brought to a time where happiness was harder to come by. Years of plentiful harvests, fine weather, and a never-ending spring gave way to a drought. Eggs never made it to hatching, and elders were brought down by diseases. Mielikki tried her best to comfort her clanmates and bring smiles to their faces, but even she was finding it hard to smile. Why was the Gladekeeper punishing her clan?

One day, a clanmate yelled out in frustration and anger, “I know why we have been cursed by our deity! The reason is lying within our very clan!” He pulled up his claw and pointed it straight at Mielikki, “She is the reason!” The clan erupted into chaos. Some were angry at the acquisition, others were skeptical, but there were some who piped up in agreement. “Remember the flower on the egg? It kept losing its petals before she hatched!” “If that’s the case, we need to cast her out before there is nothing left of this clan!”

Those murmurs turned into louder conversations until most of the clan was in agreement. Mielikki was terrified, left in the open with her clanmates surrounding her in a clear, open circle. She had no idea of what transpired before she hatched and the reasoning behind their words of fear and anger. Trembling, she twisted herself in a small ball as though one of them will lash out and strike her, just like the words were striking her very heart.

All Mielikki could feel was an air of anger and frustration. It blurred her eyes as tears poured down them. She did not want them to be angry or unhappy, so when she saw her parents climb through her clanmates to reach her and protect her from the raging crowd, she knew she had to do something to protect everyone she loved. “Please! Please stop! I don’t want anyone to get hurt!” as she uncurled and tried to bring herself upright, although shakily.

All eyes turned to her, their weight feeling like a full grown tree that had been downed. “I will leave this clan if you want me to.” Her parents started to protest, but she shook her head, “No, I cannot, in my mind or heart, have you hurt if it is due to my presence. I will leave out of my own willingness, and if it does stop this curse upon the clan, I will never return to ensure everyone’s happiness,” she then choked out, “I love you all.”

The dragons began to look uncomfortable, some shuffling their wings or feet while others looking at the ground in shame. Others began to cry. Her parents embraced her, saying that they would visit her and how they wanted to receive letters from her whenever she could send them. Her sister brought a pack for her, filled with provisions and special keepsakes from her nest, and wishing Mielikki a safe journey between tears. Who knew that a dragon who had once brought such great joy could then bring such sadness?

With a wave, Mielikki took one last look at her home and clan, forcing a smile from her lips and remembering all of the good times she had spent. From that point, she began her journey and heard the words of the Gladekeeper in her mind: “My child, I am sorry to have put you through such pain to start your journey, but your clan will now be lifted from their ill luck. You must spread your happiness and kindness to others in our world. Show them the importance of living within the present and smile at the gifts that are given, even when all seems dark and sad. I will be watching over you, Mielikki, and will guide you on your way.”

At that point, a pink petal landed squarely on her nose, causing her to sneeze. It flew off and was carried by the wind until it was no longer seen in the distance. Mielikki smiled and followed the path that the petal had taken, happy to know she carried the memories and love from her home and to know that she had a purpose in life to spread joy, with the eyes of the Gladekeeper watching over her.
