An unusual quiet filled the city. A cold night had fallen, tiny white stars flecked the deep blue sky above. There was no moon to witness the horrors this night.

A hidden alleyway, skinny and winding, looped around the back of the city. Many exits, many roads joined the winding one. For some, it was the only place they met. Damp cobbles, high walls, multicoloured moss covering every surface it could reach. There were many ways in, but very few ways out for the poor souls who got cornered.

Frantic footsteps shattered the silence, tired and uneven. Slowing. Stopping. Panting. A young wildclaw, barely an adult stood between the tall walls. He was running, but whatever was chasing him did not seem to be any more. He attempted to catch his breath.

A harsh blue glow crept past him, lighting up the cobbles beneath his feet. One moment, he stared in terror at the grounds new glow and the next he had leapt back into a frantic sprint. He ran. Continuing down the alley, not even slowing down to turn. His lungs heaved, his muscles burned. He was faltering.
He was weakening.

The world around him dimmed, the blue light crept back, it collected in one spot just behind where the wildclaw was just moments before. A moment passed, then two. And then a spiral-shaped spirit made of blue light soundlessly trotted alongside the chaotic running of the wildclaw. Their eyes met for just a brief second. But in that second he felt the torrent of joy spilling from the blue spirit. The spirit sped up, bounding on ahead.
His time was soon.

He looked to the sky, hoping to find a star to find comfort in. But there were none. The eerie empty sky of just before dawn greeted him. He was alone.
He was afraid.

He stopped. He kept his gaze fixed on the sky, frozen in terror. He knew what was in front of him, he had heard the stories. He knew what was next. But fear still coated every inch of his being, trapping him in the hell that was left for him. He dragged his gaze down and found himself eye to eye with he spirit. The joy that crashed into him before was replaced by unbreakable disappointment. A voice spoke, sounding as if it was bouncing from corner to corner of the alley,
"I thought you'd do better than that. Turn around."

He turned, though not understanding why. As he finished the turn, he linked. He could not believe his eyes. Before him was his own shadow, staring back at him. Glowing blue eyes that could rival the sun for how bright they were stared right back at him. It grew, double his size, triple. It filled every corner of the alley. The only things left were its eyes and the blue spirit from before. But then it disappeared exactly as it came. He was terrified.
He was trapped.

The blank void he now stood in was suffocating. He twisted, the blinding eyes that once stared at him now gone. He was alone. He was afraid. He was trapped. He ran with no purpose, feebly trying to escape. One final word echoed through his prison.
"Goodnight."

But in the alley where he once stood, there was now a spiral with a shifting shape and bright, glowing blue eyes. What looked like fireflies circled her, some frantically, some barely at all. As she left the alley at a leisurely pace to the background of a rising sun, she whispered a quiet word.
