"each kills the things he loves."
you could still be, what you want to, what you said you were, when i met you. you've got a warm heart, you've got a beautiful brain. but it's disintegrating, from all the medicine. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |

nameless was born into slavery. there was no hope for them. worse, they were born a nameless, battle fodder, food for the machines, often going days and days without food or sleep. they held a bow but no one taught them how to use it. they guarded the gates knowing they would die anyways if there was an attack. they were easily replaceable. them and their sister both, until she moved up into mechanics and left them. they did not resent her. nameless doesn't know of a time when they were not thinking of a way out. the slaves, despite their master's best efforts, were close. nameless' mate was in the pillowhouse, their sister worked the machines. aganippe had more magic than they knew what to do with. and brimo, he was brash and brave, and nameless is still young when he stages his escape. he shorts out the whole factory and flees the walls, him and four other slaves. nameless doesn't think they'll see him again. as punishment, the masters take aganippe and put her in a machine, a massive orb that splits her soul from her body and uses it to power another branch of factories. the process is brutal, and looks painful, and they force nameless and everyone else to watch. nameless knows they need to leave. they stage it for the next night. it works. they have to dodge patrols and searchlights, but they slip away into the night. they'll come back for everyone else; they have to, they're their family; but for now they just run, climb out of the canyon and stare down and cry, because they've never felt freedom, not even once. and as they look down, the blackness comes crawling out of nowhere and covers all that they had ever known. the shade. they know they can't make it back in time. their wings had long been clipped. but they have to try. wet-eyed and trembling, they scrabble back down the cliff's face and return to their prison. the bodies are everywhere. the blood is everywhere. the beasts are everywhere. nameless doesn't know how to fight. the beasts have the faces of those they knew before, and the don't know if the friends or the foes are scarier. when the start to come for them, they loose one arrow that flies wide before they begin to run. they can't outrun them, had already begun to mourn their short, painful freedom, when their toes catch in a cable and they sprawl on their face, bow skittering across the dry earth. they curl up, eyes squeezed shut against pain that will never come. the beasts pace, two feet away, drooling and panting and snarling. nameless looks up, and aganippe's spire stands proud and tall and unwavering, and the beasts will not approach. nameless presses their hand to the glass. the shadow of another presses back. nameless marks the border of safety and danger with a stick. they know that they can't stay here forever, as much as they'd like to; they'd starve before they were found, if they'd every be found. they figure if any time is a good time to learn to shoot, it was now. they practiced on a dead tree within their circle. they practiced on beasts. eventually they learned to catch prey and cut away the shade so they didn't get tainted as well. they try to pretend that they don't see ayers stalking the desert, blackened and dripping. they just can't deal with that right now. and eventually the fear and the sadness gave way to anger. and they go outside their circle. and they start to hunt the beasts. by the time the order comes around, nameless has all but stripped the place of the beasts. they had no runes to purge it, so they just slaughtered them, host and all, for they had no knowledge of anything else. but gods, did they ever know about the progression of it, the parasitic nature of it, and how easy it is to overload them with magic. the order was still new; they didn't know about any of this. how it takes someone's face whom you love and works it against you. nameless says they'll go with them, but they need to help him. this whole time, they had avoided ayers like the plague, ran the other way when they saw him on the verge of tears. if they could help him, they'd go with them. they had no idea of karteke was still alive, but they had to try and find her. they wouldn't leave aganippe. they needed to find their sister. all of the order's chapter in the canyon was doing two things; ridding ayers of the shade and searching for karteke. though nameless could leave, they always ended up underneath aganippe's spire every night, and invited the order to join; they were safe from the beasts under her watchful eye. |
