A shaft of golden light, from the heavens to the earth. A stillness. Eyes, opening all at once. Beauty and horror tangled in a single being, luminousness that could only be described as sacred intertwined with fearsome, dark sludge. They watch him fall, from the sky to the earth. Then they run to him on swift feet, with almost manic speed, as if possessed. (Perhaps they are.)

Who are you, is the first question they ask, but he only blinks what seems to be thousands of eyes and does not answer. When they grow bold enough to draw near they begin to hear it, the endless humming symphony of voices in a hundred languages they do not know. Who are you, they ask again, but he has no power to answer. His maw opens, and then shuts again. His eyes seem to be crying out for something they cannot give, and although they do their best to provide him kindness they cannot overcome the oddness of it all, having a creature so obviously otherworldly in their midsts. He gives them pause, and rightly so, with the way his feet fall softly on the ground like those of a guide for lost souls.

His kindness, they discover in time. When some hopeless soul ends up entangled in the sway of the viscous, inky fluid that drips from his jaws, convulsing helplessly on the ground, he looks on with eyes drawn endlessly wide by pity, and he is the first to suggest possible remedies, leaping to the tasks of grinding herbs into poultices and searching for fresh water. He is sorry, he says, in that soft way of his, and they know that it is the truth. They do not question the anomaly in their ranks anymore. In a way, he is one of their own.

Although his efforts are fumbling at best, although his earnest attempts at helping with the clan's daily chores make life more difficult on a regular basis, although they see him sleep and watch his multitude of eyelids flutter open and then shut, all out of phase with one another, what matters to them is no longer the life he does not remember, the life he led before. Now, he is. He is one of their own.
