Orult Mad-Mind is - and was - an insane dragon.

He was born the first son of a Mirror named Gorrum, who had been an outcast as a youngling in the Plaguelands, and finally found acceptance under the Lightweaver. Gorrum had high hopes for his firstborn, all of which were dashed the moment Orult clawed his way out of his shell, snarling viciously at his surroundings, and lashing out at the wobbling eggs of his nest mates. Gorrum and Haimona tried their best to rehabilitate their ferocious son. But after he gave helpless little Zot a terrible scar across his cheek, they knew there was nothing they could do.

They took him to the darkest, most winding place they knew of - The Fortress of Ends. Muzzled and chained, they took him deep into the twisting tunnels, careful to mark their way with streaks of red paint along the walls. They found a cave, within the bowels of the castle, and in the cave was an iron cage, warped with years of cold, but still sturdy and strong. They put their son into the cage, and with tears streaking their cheeks, closed and locked the door, and hurried away and left their son forever.

Eventually, after years of stagnantly staring at icy walls, a new dragon came to the caves which held Orult’s cage. A Tundra, lithe and strong, with blood on her muzzle and a memory sharper than most of her kin. She freed Orult from his cage, cowed him into submission, and took him home with her. Orult now lived with Tumeric, as her mate for many years, exploring where she went, watching her, waiting for signs of weakness, just as she watches him. To him, his life was a paradise. He was free, strong and wild, and he had a mate and pack of his own.

One day, Orult and Tumeric were exploring further and deeper within the Fortress of Ends than they had ever gone before. They stumbled across an old scroll, covered with cryptic writing, in a sudden flare of light, they were changed, Orult found himself larger, heavier, covered with a thick fur coat much like Tumeric’s had been. His head cleared, the whirl of instinct fading into one that, while still wild and fierce, was colder and more watchful than his heated Mirror mind. He was now a Gaoler, of the Seeker branch.

It took Orult and Tumeric some time to adjust to their new forms. The heavy coats, stocky bodies, and vestigial wings were a shock, though both of them appreciated their new fangs. Orult’s diet did not change, but his manner of hunting did, and he spent several hungry weeks trying to relearn how to stalk and catch the few creatures that lived in the Fortress’ halls. They remained down there for weeks, and searched for other Gaolers, but were unsuccessful. Instead, they found many scrolls and parchments explaining the goals and structure of the Gaoler’s and their culture, a useful thing for Tumeric, but not illiterate Orult.

Finally, they returned to The Icebound in their new forms, clawed feet leaving great footprints in the earth, through the snow down to the soil. The clan fled in terror before them, and it was only Tumeric’s ressurences that calmed them - barely. Orult delighted in the screeches of the younger, flightier dragons at his approach, and it was only his newer, colder instincts that kept him from hunting them down in reaction to their run. But the attention was constant, and rather irritating, and in the end, he and Tumeric both relocated their caves to just within the boundaries of the Fortress of Ends.

They live there now, within the Fortress where their forebears live. They have not met any trueborn Gaolers yet, but they Seek the Shade, and teach their Gaoler offspring to do the same. Orult delights in this new kind of hunt, a slow, seeking sort of hunt, and he devotes much of his time to the search.

He thought he was happy in his old life. But he is even happier with the new.
