Continued from Amity Part 1

“Of course they were right.”

A twisting shape darted amongst the grey clouds and through the driving rain, muttering to himself.

“All I wanted was to bring them back more gifts, but nooo, I had to let bloody wind push me around!”

Lightning flashed somewhere to his left, and Prosper froze. Thunder growled all around him and he chuckled nervously.

“And now all I need is—”

He paused, swivelling his ears. What was he hearing now, just barely over the howling wind?

Was somedrake crying?

His ears pointed down, following the sound and he tilted his head to look beneath him. Prosper could barely make out the ground just below, through the clouds. The closer he flew, the louder the sound was becoming, and soon he could tell it belonged to a young dragon.

He was supposed to keep going, he knew his clanmates must be worried sick about him for taking longer than usual and getting himself caught in the storm. The Spiral took another look below before flying lower. The nearer he got, the more his stomach churned.

What must have been buildings and houses were now crumbled walls and broken rooftops, scattered across a muddy field. Rising smoke patches were dotted here or there, suggesting fires had spread until they’d been extinguished by the rain. If there were any bodies, Prosper could see none unless they were crushed somewhere beneath the fallen walls or sunk underneath the muddy surface.

Keeping both ears out, he followed the source of the quiet wailing before it grew as he flew closer. He stopped to land, his feet squelching in the mud as he strode around a small mound, the rectangle bricks that shaped it were melting together from the rain. The crying was coming from inside, he could hear, and he froze, covering his mouth with his gloved paws to stifle a gasp when a long golden shape caught his sight on the other side.

Lying before him, an armoured body of a Mirror was stretched out, her arms and paws extended as if reaching for something. Her aqua eyes stared at nothing and she wasn’t breathing. Prosper barely glanced at the crimson that stained her shoulder before quickly looking away, his heart hammering.

Now he noticed the small hole in the mound’s side. Ducking down to peer inside, it only took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darkness, and what he saw inside caused his heart to lurch.

Frantically, Prosper clawed at the walls, pulling the sloppy bricks from near the top and tearing pieces from the roof. He swiftly dipped both paws inside, slowly and carefully lifting out a coiled, wailing bundle, her green scales caked in the red mud.

He cradled the baby in his arms as she continued to cry, tears cascading down her cheeks and leaving trails through the muck on her face. By the Eleven, she was freezing to the touch, and Prosper’s own eyes began to sting as he wondered who would leave a baby all alone out here and for how long she’d been alone. And the Mirror…

Had she been trying to protect the child? Was she the one who built the shelter for her? If another dragon had been near, whoever killed her must have also heard the baby’s desperate cries. And still they just left her here, perhaps to die.

A loud snap! interrupted his thoughts and he froze. He didn’t know if it might have been from the leftover fires or if somedrake else was still around, but he didn’t want to find out.

Quickly, he unbuttoned the front of his coat and carefully, he tucked the infant Spiral inside, leaving her muddied face to stick out. Her crying was now muffled against his shirt and he snapped his blotchy wings open, taking off into the clouds above.

...

On and on he flew. He didn’t stop until a familiar grey building lay straight ahead. He could barely make out the shouts of other dragons.

“He’s back!”

“Think he regrets leaving in the first place?”

“Just thank the Eleven he’s okay.”

Prosper drifted down and closer to the others waiting for him. They were standing just outside the castle’s heavy wooden doors. When he landed softly, they urged him inside and pulled the doors closed behind them.

“Didn’t we warn you not to go out in this weather?” the rumbling voice of Urdin asked.

“Yes,” Prosper hesitated, shifting his arms, “but if I hadn’t—”

“You must be freezing,” Hollyberry cut him off as she placed one red paw on the shoulder of his soaked jacket. "And how did you get so muddy?"

“I wouldn’t be worried about me,” Prosper said quietly, cracking a small smile. He moved one arm to reach for the front of his coat, and the four dragons surrounding him released shocked gasps.

The baby Spiral that was curled up against Prosper’s chest slowly opened her eyes from her sleep. Round and ruby, they stared from one pair of different eyes to the next.

“I don’t get it,” Aerico said. “The marketplace’s selling ‘atchlings now?”

Beside him, a pied Skydancer snorted. “Of course not, you coiling cretin.”

Aerico narrowed his crimson eyes at Astraeus. “Well what’m I supposed to think when there’s no land between our island and—”

Quiet you two,” Urdin’s deep rumble warned.

The baby in Prosper’s coat squirmed and began to blubber until he spoke softly. “The storm blew me off course,” the young Spiral said. “There must’ve been a war going on and she was by herself. I—I couldn’t just—”

“I know,” Holly hushed. “You did the right thing.”

“Where’s Alyss?” Prosper demanded.

“Tending to Pigeon. Come with me,” the red she-drake urged.

Prosper strode along with her up the staircase and down the hall, leaving the other three dragons behind. Neither said a word, and Prosper would keep sending worried glances down to the baby snuggled inside his coat. When the stopped at the only room with the door left wide open, they both heard two dragons speaking from inside.

“...just so tired of feeling like this,” the quiet voice of Pigeon choked.

“I’m so sorry, Pigeon,” Alyss’ voice tried to soothe her. “I’m doing all that I can to help make you better.”

Pigeon sniffled and drew in a shaky breath. “I know...I’m sorry, too.”

“Alyss,” Holly said softly but catching the other Spiral’s attention.

Alyss faced Pigeon once more. “I’ll check on you later. Try to get some sleep now,” he hushed to her. As Pigeon pulled up her blankets and lay on her side, Alyss left her to rest and closed the door behind him quietly. His expression soon turned stern when he eyed Prosper.

“I was afraid you’d get yourself injured or killed, young drake.”

Prosper gulped but remained still. “But then...she would’ve been,” he said softly, pulling the front of his coat open and revealing the small and mud-splattered face.

Alyss froze, staring down into the baby’s large eyes with his own. He didn’t say a word until a small wave of grief washed over him.

“Oh no,” he murmured. “What happened?”

“I don’t know. I only saw her and...”

“And what?”

“Nothing. Just her.”

“Well...” Alyss trailed off before straightening up. “We can’t just stand around, can we?” he asked, directing a small smile to him, and he stretched out his winged arms. “I’ll give her the best care I can.”

Prosper hesitated a few times, but he finally reached inside the front of his coat and gently lifted the baby out. He cradled her for a bit longer before handing her to Alyss, and she began to squirm and whimper again.

Amity...” Prosper whispered, his voice cracking. When he saw her stop, he forced a smile. “This is Alyss. He’s going to help you. Please be a good girl...” he trailed off and his vision blurred.

Poppy,” the baby cried, stretching out her arms to him.

Oh,” Holly said softly, “I think she likes you.” She sent a gentle smile down to Prosper, whose pale green eyes started welling with tears.

“And I see you love her already,” Alyss replied quietly.

“I have to,” Prosper whispered. “She broke my heart.”

“Maybe you can help me then,” Alyss said, his own smile spreading.

“Take care,” Hollyberry wished them as Prosper wiped his eyes with a gloved paw, and the red and green Nocturne turned to walk away.

“Come with me,” Alyss said to Prosper, and both Spirals made their own way down the opposite end of the grand hallway.

Neither spoke as they strode side by side, and Prosper would only keep his eyes on Amity. Whenever she tried reaching for him, Prosper would extend one arm to her and let her grasp his claws in hers. When they reached Alyss’ room, the doctor handed the baby back to Prosper so he could open the door and let them inside before shutting it behind them.

“Let’s get that muck off of her, first,” Alyss instructed, reaching for a white cloth that sat folded on the counter and dunking it in a small ceramic tub filled with warm water. “Think you can keep her still for me?”

“I think so,” Prosper answered, smiling wide to Amity as he set her down on the top of a polished wooden table.

Alyss stepped over to them and raised the dampened cloth to Amity’s scales. At its touch, she whimpered again and tried to wriggle free, but when she felt Prosper’s paw at her back, she soon settled down. Now she watched in fascination as the cloth was being rubbed along her scales and wings, and she closed her large eyes when her face had a turn. She squealed and kicked and giggled when Alyss reached the cloth between each of her toes.

Alyss pulled the cloth away and eyed its now muddied appearance before glancing back down to Amity. “Well, I’ve...gotten all that I can and still she’s so dirty.” Dipping the cloth back in the tub, he scrubbed as hard as he could and lifted it back out. His green eyes widened until they were completely round and his smile vanished.

The entire cloth, once a clean white, was now a dulled pink from the mud and clay.

“Oh dear,” Al hesitated. Looking back over to Amity, he saw that her body was still covered in the muck, and she didn’t look much different from when he’d started cleaning her up. The baby kept showing off her gums in a big grin to Prosper, however, and the striped Spiral returned a horrified look up to the doctor.

“She uh, must’ve spent a...very long time in the mud...” Al said hesitantly. "Whatever she's covered in has left her scales stained."

At his words, Prosper winced and his expression turned sombre when he glanced away back to Amity.

“I don’t mean—what I’m trying to say is—” Alyss stammered. “That wasn’t your fault,” he resumed, composing himself. “What really matters is that she’s safe now. Only think about that.”

“I know,” Prosper said quietly. “I just can’t help but wonder who would do such a thing.”

“Well you’re going to have to stop thinking about that. It’s not healthy for anydrake to have such thoughts.”

Prosper now watched as Al wandered to a tall wooden cupboard and reached in for a squat glass jar that was full of a kind of green mush, and twisting the lid open before digging around with a silver spoon. Prosper asked what it was made of, and Alyss explained that it was one of several mashes he’d made for hatchlings, that the one he was feeding Amity and waiting for her to accept each mouthful just had various crushed insects and other bugs. Prosper chuckled when he saw Amity try to gulp down as much as she could.

“She must be so hungry, the poor dear,” Alyss said softly. He fed her one more spoonful before putting it and the jar down. When he did so, Amity began blubbering again. “Oh come now,” Al hushed to her, “we don’t want you to get an upset tummy.”

“What next?” Prosper asked, leaning forward.

“I imagine she’ll be getting tired now,” Alyss said as he listened to the baby’s whimpering grow into frustrated crying. “Would you like to rock her while I clean up?”

Prosper immediately but carefully picked her up and she coiled up in his arms when Alyss turned around to wash and rinse the spoon in the metal sink.

“Now,” Alyss began, speaking to Prosper as he started twisting the lid back and placing the jar in the cupboard, “it helps to have patience with new hatchlings. Some will always be more fussy and take longer to calm than others. And...” he trailed off as he faced them again, his green eyes widening in disbelief.

Her large eyes already closed, Amity now slept soundly in Prosper’s gently swaying arms. The young Spiral looked back to Alyss, cocking a single scaled brow and smiling.

“Beginner’s luck,” Al muttered, though the corners of his own mouth were curling up.

A few minutes later, Prosper had set Amity down gently in a small wooden crib in another room that led from Al’s office. Prosper’s vision began blurring again as he had to leave her to sleep, and reluctantly followed Alyss out of the room and back into the hallway.

“I’m sorry, Prosper,” Alyss hushed to him, “but she has to stay with me for a while until I know she’s strong enough.”

“I know,” Prosper sniffed, wiping tears from his eyes before they could slide down.

“You can still visit her of course,” Al reassured him, “but only when she’s awake. And when I’m awake. I don’t need you sneaking in every five seconds,” he added, smiling.

Prosper nodded slowly, and he allowed his smile to spread across his face as one tear managed to slip down one cheek.
