Rhaegar was abandoned at birth by his parents for the only reason anyone can figure is because of his pale feathers. A coatl born native to the Ashfall Waste with white feathers was seen as an abomination and a bad omen in any family. Never knowing who his real parents were, he was left in the wilderness, alone and hungry.
It was only luck that Queen Soyala's dragon gatherer's had been looking in that region on that day and found him. Of course, some mystiks would say that it was fate for this pale little coatl to be found by a clan of fellow pale feathered coatls and other misfits. He was adopted and welcomed with open arms.
As he grew, he managed to catch the eye of another orphan in the lair, Cersei, and the two bonded over their lack of known family. With no one other then their lair to call family, they bonded and, once they were old enough, asked the King & Queen if they could become a mated pair. With their blessing they united as one, finally having someone for each other to seek comfort from.
Since that day, Rhaegar has worked with Spike & Miko in the background, helping them sell their wares in the Southern Expansion where other pale coatls were much more common while the other two traveled to various parts of the world. He has been learning quickly under their guidance to shape metals and make armor, clothes and jewelry (though his favorite is jewelry smithing).
