On Sornieth, many dragons choose their mates with regard for the appearance of their future offspring. As such, identical twins hatch with alarming frequency. The only thing that differentiated Dreadwing and Skyquake from any other pair of such twins was the telepathic bond between them – a bond through which they could communicate, sharing their thoughts and emotions.

The twins shared this bond from birth, utilizing it constantly in their formative years. Their personalities merged together seamlessly, and it wasn’t long before the line between them became dangerously blurred. Most outsiders to the clan could not differentiate the twins, in either appearance or actions. In fact, neither could the many of their own clanmates.

Their bond remained secret, however, until surprisingly late in their adolescence. Dreadwing and Skyquake were being trained as warriors, and had taken to the role with alarming enthusiasm. It was clear that they genuinely desired to fight – and more worryingly, genuinely desired to kill.

It was rare for the twins to train separately, but on one such occasion, Skyquake was injured – inadvertently knocked from the sky by one of her peers. Dreadwing experienced an immediate and severe physical reaction to the injury, sharing the pain that her twin felt. She deliberately recreated the wound on her own body, forcibly snapping three bones in her own wing while her clanmates stared on in horror.

This incident led to the discovery of their bond, and came as a revelation to their clan, many of whom had wondered whether the twins were possessed or otherwise cursed.

Now raised and trained as a unit, their combat skills improved rapidly. Though volatile, they were also rational – barely on the cusp of adulthood, their minds had not yet been crushed, and their hearts had not yet been broken. As such, their energy could be controlled and directed, each balancing the other’s emotional extremes quite effectively.

Reaching adulthood, Dreadwing and Skyquake showed no sign of growing apart. When Dreadwing took a mate, the clan held its collective breath, anticipating that their relationship would be irreparably damaged. However, the opposite was true – their bond adjusted to accommodate this new factor, and the twins easily and naturally began to share said mate between them.

Needless to say, the male Ridgeback in question was widely perceived as an incredibly lucky dragon. However, the twins soon discovered that their mate was little more than unfaithful scum – having laden them both with his eggs, he had secretly begun to pursue additional mates.

No secret could be kept from the twins for long. Upon discovering his infidelity, Dreadwing and Skyquake quite literally tore the Ridgeback apart. Yes, the twins brutally and swiftly enacted their revenge against their former mate, whom they henceforth referred to only as “traitor.” However, the trauma of the incident, amplified by the bond between them, crushed their minds and broke their hearts.

The clan was uneasy – the twins had been justified in their actions, but in the aftermath, both were becoming increasingly aggressive and violent. When Dreadwing and Skyquake turned their intimacy inward, seeing one-another as the only worthwhile mates, the clan was disgusted – this was a perversion of the natural order.

The twins were on the verge of being expelled from the clan.

Then, Silverslash, leader of the Clan of Second Chances, sent out a call for warriors. The twins took the opportunity without a second thought – the Unrepentant clan was known to be harsh and cruel, much like they themselves had become.

During the demonstration of their abilities, Skyquake’s impulsive and creative alterations to their aerial routine thoroughly impressed the old gladiator. He saw their potential to become more than mere soldiers, and remains of the opinion that with sufficient age and experience, the twins could easily rank among his most valuable commanders.

Silverslash accepts them as they are, regardless of their blatantly hostile and volatile tendencies. They are warriors, and as such, their traits are irrelevant. What is relevant is that both are highly skilled and unwaveringly loyal – trained for battle since childhood, the twins have adapted easily to the rigid structure of the Unrepentant army.

The twins have repeatedly proven their worth on the field of battle, and as such, the dragons of the Unrepentant Clan have come to respect their bond, as well as the intimacy between them. It is clear that they belong here, and equally clear that to even attempt to come between them would be a fatal proposition.

Broken and embittered, all that remains of Dreadwing and Skyquake is their genuine desire to fight, their genuine desire to kill. As members of the Clan of Second Chances, they may do both without consequences – and they may do so together.
