Biography
As the founder of the clan, Lysiae is strong willed and stubborn, and, although not the most powerful in the clan, everyone knows she is not to be trifled with. For a clan founder, she is not very nurturing, but she has her own way of caring for others, and she'd rather leave the running of the clan to those a little more even tempered. Still, when a punishment is needed, she can always be counted on for something stern yet fair. And despite her failings to connect to some of her clan in the way that Amala or some of the others could, she loves each and every one of them fiercely, and would defend them to the death.
***
She could remember the shame she'd felt when she first announced that she wanted to leave and start her own clan. Not because she was ashamed of her goal - Lysiae had known for a while that she wanted to do this, and she knew that it was one of the best adventures she could go on. But the reactions around her had made her heart sink and her stomach twist into knots. First there was the disbelief, and then the laughter. Surely she must be joking. Lysiae could hardly take care of a familiar, how could she want to start a clan? But when she hadn't laughed, the smiles had faded and the eyes had become almost accusing. Had she thought this through? She did realize that she'd have to be a mother - something she'd never really shown interest in - and that she'd have to take care of not only her own hatchlings, but the whole clan? She was antisocial, and overly blunt, and hardly had any friends in her own clan. How could she expect to start a new one? Lysiae bore these criticisms with her head held high, although they hurt her with their accuracy. She knew she wasn't particularly beautiful, or maternal, or even friendly, but nevertheless she wanted this. And when Lysiae wanted something, she got it.
That night her mother had come to speak with her alone. She'd looked...sad. Not because her child was leaving, Lysiae had siblings that had left and her mother had been proud and happy. Lysiae had never been a favorite, either, so that couldn't account for it. So she couldn't fathom why her mother looked so sad.
"Is this really what you want?" her mother had asked.
"Yes," was all she had said.
There followed a silence, before her mother sighed and said, "Well, I know I can't stop you. But remember that I love you, and that is why I have to advise you against this. I don't think you will make a good clan leader. You're impulsive, and stubborn, and harsh, and clan leaders need to be even headed, kind, and loving. I want what's best for you. I don't want you to be hurt by your failure."
Lysiae hadn't said anything, and after her mother had finally left, she'd let the hurt and the rage inside her drive her out, away from home. She didn't know where she was flying to, only that she was going to start her clan and she was going to show them all. It might not have been such a bad idea, except for the fact that a storm had been brewing all afternoon and it finally broke loose that night. Lysiae was blown off course - what little course she had in the first place - and ended up deep in the Tangled Wood, starved, disoriented, and exhausted.
There she was found and taken in by a Shadow clan, where she stayed for several weeks to rest and get rehabilitated. There she found new purpose. These dragons didn't doubt her plan. They didn't laugh at her, or point out her faults. In fact, one of them decided to come with her, and thus Brer, who would soon become a fighter by her side and a steadfast friend, joined her in a quest to start something new. Others promised to come visit as soon as they got on her feet, and Lysiae knew that these friends meant it. With Brer by her side and more friends supporting her from afar, Lysiae set out anew in search of a place to make a lair. As they flew over the Viridian Labyrinth, she spotted the sun glinting off the pool, and they circled down to drink and rest. There they found the cave.
Of course, it wasn't perfect. Brer could hardly squeeze into the crack that was the cave entrance, and there was an awful lot of digging to be done before they could make it habitable. But Lysiae was nothing if not determined, and soon enough Brer could fit to dig by her side, and then they had a cave large enough to live in.
One morning, while they were working hard, Lysiae emerged from that crack in order to take a drink and rest her weary muscles. To her surprise, there was a tiny Fae there, watching the little clouds of dust that drifted out of the cave mouth as Brer worked industriously inside.
"What are you doing?" he'd asked, his bright green eyes curious.
"Expanding the cave," she'd replied, rolling in the shallows to get some of the dirt off her scales. "I'm going to start a new clan, but the cave needs to be bigger. It's big enough for us now, but if we want any more dragons to join us...well, we're expanding."
"Can I join you?"
Lysiae was slightly taken aback. She had no idea who this was, or why he wanted to stay with some dragons he'd just met, but he seemed pleasant enough. Still... "That depends," she'd said irritably. "Can you dig?"
"I could try. I've never done cave expansion before." He shrugged.
Lysiae was a little annoyed at his attitude, more because he was so cheerful than anything else, but at least he was willing. At the worst, he wouldn't dig much and then would fly off when she got mad at him for not pulling his weight. Lysiae wasn't going to tolerate laziness in her clan. "What's your name?" she asked.
"Prip," he'd replied, and then his green eyes had widened and he looked behind her - and up.
"Who's this?" Brer had asked, shaking some of the dirt from his wings.
"He wants to join us," Lysiae had responded.
Brer took a long drink from the spring, and paused to think. Then he'd shrugged. "He'll have a hard time keeping up with the digging. But if he's completely useless, I could always use him as a teeth cleaner. He looks like he could really get in the little cracks."
Prip made an indignant little squeak, and Lysiae laughed. As if to prove that he was more use than just a teeth cleaner, he'd thrown himself into the digging work, and proved to be entertaining enough, even if he took half an hour to clear what Brer could with one scoop of his great claws.
And so her clan grew, slowly but also faster than she'd expected. One minute she was greeting more friends who'd arrived from the Tangled Wood, eager to see where she'd finally settled down, and the next there were hatchlings running around underfoot, and then Brer was heading more digging teams as they had to expand their lair again. Lysiae found that she didn't need to be everything that a clan leader should be. When she couldn't be level headed, Brer could. And when she couldn't be nurturing, Amala was. Lysiae, who had always been solitary and argumentative, found herself with closer friends than she could have ever imagined.
And so every time she sat on the rocks, watching the hatchlings play in the water or climb on Brer as he slept in the sunshine, she allowed herself to feel a deep pride for what she'd accomplished. Was she the best leader? No, she wasn't. But her friends didn't mind, and their clan grew anyway. She was learning. And she was succeeding. And that was more than she could have ever asked for.
***
Lysiae earned her piece of Brer's lapis jewelry early on, when it became clear that their clan was done struggling through its early stages and could continue to exist. Despite his conviction that he needed to help her start the clan, Brer was unsure whether such an angry, stubborn dragon could pull off leading a peaceful clan, but with help she managed to do so and earned his loyalty and respect forever. She wears it with pride, as it reminds her of her earliest supporter and one of her dearest friends.
