Wolfram winces as Morello swipes a cotton pad saturated with alcohol over the deep cut in his palm. Rust-red tracks wind their way down the student's forearm like veins projected over the surface of his skin. After the dried blood is wiped away, the physician applies a thin layer of antiseptic, leaving the wound glossy and vivid. Arguably, things like this are the easy part of his job, but somehow his least favorite. Something about it makes him feel like a voyeur—the torn skin, the alien undulation of flesh underneath, the obscenity of impossibly red blood. Things not meant for the eye to see. He gently prods the swollen surrounding skin with a gloved fingertip. "You'll be alright," Morello tells Wolfram, who's looking away, biting his lip. "But I need to put in stitches." The student swears under his breath, and Morello tsks gently as he turns away to prepare the suturing needle. "Doc," Wolfram says. There's a telltale rustle behind Morello as the boy fidgets atop the exam table, but he doesn't hop down from it and the doctor returns to unwrapping the sterilized tissue forceps. |

After a pause, Wolfram bursts out, "Why do you work here?" Morello's hands pause above the table. "I mean," Wolfram adds hurriedly, "I just... I've heard you're, like, really qualified, and you got offered a big job in Eastbank Hospital in Meyer.... so why are you here? Isn't it boring for you?" Always so fearlessly inquisitive, Morello thinks to himself. Although with the wrong professor, that would really end up biting him back. |
