Story
|
When Ana was born, her handicap was obvious. According to the doctor and her mother, Mary, the moment Ana exited her egg her back legs appeared slightly twisted. It apparently had something to do with the way she was situated in the egg, though the egg itself was also damaged by the time it emerged. For the first few years of her life, Ana struggled to move. Her mother would get the servants to carry Ana wherever she wanted to go. But while piggyback rides were fun, Ana felt ashamed and horrible about having to rely on others to carry her everywhere. And so she began to bother her mother about any other alternative. Mary conceded and began to search for something to help Ana get more used to walking or to help her navigate. Finally, Mary was able to track down a skilled smith who agreed to construct custom-made leg braces that should help Ana stay on her own two feet. When Mary presented the braces to Ana, Ana burst into tears and buried her face in her mother's chest as she thanked her profusely. Then, she quickly fitted them onto herself and began the hard, long process of learning how to use them. Her mother would help her sometimes, holding her hands and helping her walk across the hallways. Other times, the guard Gaunt would attempt to help get her used to the mechanisms strapped onto her legs. After about a year, Ana was highly skilled at maneuvering with the braces. If someone knew what to look for, and focused, they could spot a slight stiffness to her walk, but otherwise it looked totally normal. If she ran, however, it was quite clear that her legs were strange. |

Relationships
Mary Mother Ana loves her mother greatly, and knows that she is one of the few (if not the only) person to ever get to see the slightly softer and caring side to Queen Mary. Yet, she finds it hard to reconcile the image of a loving, if not inexperienced, mother with the image of the brutal and somewhat cruel Queen. Ana disagrees with her mother's actions, but every time she tries to speak up it seems like her tongue gets stuck to the roof of her mouth. |
