"I don't believe in the word 'quit'. That's not how I do business."
For a majority of folks, life doesn't start off all that great. For Shodia, her mother was a scavenger along the border of the Scarred Wasteland and the Starfall Isles. It was a rather nasty place to grow up, not to pass offense to the land itself. Her father, on the other hand, was a con-man. As con-men go, he was deceitful and full of himself, but Shodia thought he was the perfect example of what a con-man should be. Suave, cunning, charming, and most of all, dirty deep, deep down. To make matters worse, it seemed that whatever Shodia did was never enough. A rather passive child, she never quite strove for perfection in anything. It was always “just-good-enough” as her mother liked to say. That wouldn't do. Not for Shodia. Whether it was scavenging with her mother or helping her father make some scummy deal, Shodia always found criticism waiting for her at the end of the day. She didn't properly pick the bones right. She didn't sell her part as starving child right. She didn't look close enough along the soiled ground. She never said her lines like her father told her to. Why couldn't she be passionate about something? Why couldn't she show some emotion and place that into her work? It was too much for her to bare but, as a young child, where would she go? What options did she have? Thus, her attitude hardened into something far more unhealthy. She had taken the harsh criticisms of her parents and crafted herself a serious, unemotional attitude built with a side of perfectionism by the time she was a young adult.
By the time she was old enough to leave home, the damage had been done. She was a cold-hard business woman bent on making a name for herself. The only skill she used from her parents' rough upbringing was scavenging. Using this skill, she became a beachcomber, scanning the waves and the sand for any sign of valuables. What she found to be more interesting that sunken ships and washed ashore treasures, however, was a more natural beauty. Windstar Bay was home to some of the most beautiful seashells she had ever seen. The strong currents and the high magical energy from the Starfall Isles seemed to have shells from all over the world appear, and some shells with such beautiful, unearthly colors no doubt due to magical interference. As a side gig, Shodia used these beautiful shells to craft jewelry. Her business boomed faster than she had anticipated and was soon making jewelry full time. Her most frequent customers ended up being mages from the Observatory taking a much needed vacation, or pirates looking to add some flare to their outfits. It only took a year or two before her business was so successful, she knew it was time to change her headquarters. First, however, there was something else that needed to be dealt with.
Looking at her face in the mirror was difficult. She was a Ridgeback, just like her father. Her past had clung tighter to her than barnacles on the side of a ship. It was time for a change. Using some of her newfound wealth, she purchased a breed change scroll and quickly went to work utilizing it. The process, often described as painful, was enough for her to withstand. By the end of the changing ceremony, she found herself different. Something more akin to how she felt on the inside. A guardian. A loyal, strong breed. Different from both of her parents. Now, filled with a new fire inside of her, and a new look to match, she set off to expand her reputation and continue her delicate, perfect work. While looking for a new place to settle, she heard of Clan Guardianite through local gossip among various towns and cities. It sounded perfect. A fresh start. A new home. She quickly made her way towards the clan and set up her headquarters in Menireach Town. From there, she became an even more famous seamstress and jewelry maker, her designs and expertise highly sought after. An honest business founded on her passion for seashells and skills. A much better deal than what was handed to her at birth.
Yet work can be so exhausting. During a rather slow week, Shodia decided she would take a well-earned vacation on a small island she knew was empty. If anything, she considered it a personal paradise. While she was relaxing and enjoying being away from the stressful environment of her workplace for a while, she had met someone by sheer chance. A beautiful guardian, Lorelei. One thing had led to the next, and before long, a beautiful proposal on their nameless beach. Shodia had found someone to bring out the best in her, to help her work past the problems that had been forged within her since she was a young child. Yet with the help of undying love, she knows she can work past them. Maybe that's because she had found something all guardians search for in life. Her charge that also happened to be the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. More beautiful than any shell or piece of jewellery. More stunning than the setting sun and more glorious than a rising moon. Yes, Shodia knows, her life has become complete. It is not free of its challenges, but all of them can be dealt with thanks to Lorelei by her side.
Business continues to boom, especially during the warmer months when vacationers and pirates alike settle for a short while. Most everyone looking for some beautiful testament of their trip by the water or for something to show off to crewmates. Now, however, Shodia plans outfits for fashion shows and has expanded her skills far beyond what she started with. At times, she looks back on how hard she had to work to get here and smiles. Every struggle was worth it in the end. She's who she wanted to be, and even more than that.
