" My mother made this clan, my father died for it, and I'll be damned if I won't fight for this home. "

Her mother was approaching thirty-eight now, a nearly unheard-of age for her kind, and the revered gnoll had finally reached the old-age decline. Her muzzle was silvering over scars and thinning velvet fur, her once-proud crest bristles were growing fewer and shorter, and there was unease growing in the clan as she had made no mention of a new ruler, queen or an unusual king. Maulrow, the clan barghest, had been seen speaking with her, and watching the old queen as she slept, patient and waiting.

One morning, the old woman rose from her bed, a collection of pelts she'd never felt the need to upgrade from, and with a certainty bordering on the Seer's, marched to the meeting-space near her tent and let out a loud howl, a summons to what she knew would be her last meeting.

"My children, I have grown old and Dalsein is heavy for me. It is time the hammer choose a new Queen."

One by one, the whooping gnolls and changelings and others that made up her clan wound round in a spiral, and the old matriarch set down the elvenmade warhammer on the stone altar to the storms. Respectfully, and as she directed, the three Children of Gale were at the end of the line, for the old queen wanted all her people to have a chance at ruling, should the kingmaker hammer deem someone else worthy. One by one, the people of the clan tried to grasp the warhammer and were shocked painfully to hold it.

As it neared the end of the line, cocky firstborn Maawrs grasped it firmly, and was rewarded with a crackle that made her fur stand all on end, and dust immediately gravitate to her. The old gnollmother let out a snort, she'd told her to be humble but no. Next was the cool Seer-in-training, Lylien, the changeling born of Gale. He put his hand out to it, and, like a plasma ball, out came tendrils of lightning, a gentler reprimand to one who knew already he would not get-- nor did he want-- any sort of kingship. Last was Khresheth, who set her ears back and, clenching her fist once, opened her roughened handpaw and reached out for it, expecting pain. Instead of a resounding crackle, however, there was a warmth to it, and she met no ill fate. Her mother's scarred visage lit up immediately, and the gnoll-queen took her pup by the arm and raised it high, warhammer held aloft, before letting go of the hand, leaving the younger gnoll triumphant in front of her new clanmate-subjects. The crowd whooped and cheered, and the only slightly embarrassed gnoll gave her best imitation of her mother's howl.

That night, Hrir passed in her bed, the barghest seen leaving with something brightly glowing in his inky maw, and Khresheth took her crown to lead her people to and through whatever dear Fortune might decide to throw at them.

Since that day, Khresheth took their little nomadic tribe and built them a proper stable village, stabilizing what her mother founded, and making it more hospitable to those who came in and were unused to the barbarian's life her mother had endured. More changelings and gnolls worshippers of the Pantheon came, and brought with them letters and learning, so the old ratfolk diplomat could finally have a bit of a rest, and tributes and bounties were paid in stone and steel to properly make the temple on the edge of the Stormcliff coast. A proper training-grounds was made from stamp-hardened earth, and she began a harbour in the Gale's Sigh Bay so their warring kingdom could grow and be current with the larger ones that it was surrounded by. Some who didn't get the message that the Hrir's Gale tribe was not to be messed with lightly were beaten soundly, and others were given treaties and alliance, until she, too, reached an old and respectable thirty-four and began to show age as well...
