Where Nekhbet came from, there was no room for those who meddled in the Shade.

With the roars of Emperors echoing in their ears, his leader mercilessly slaughtered any dragon rumored to have even only come in contact with the Shade. There could be no chance, given their proximity to the Emperors dwelling in the divide between Plague and Earth. Nekhbet had to hear his parents, two high caste dragons, talk about the Shadetouched, the Shadehunters and researchers, like they were scum to just be scraped off their boots.

Nekhbet grew up this way, with that seed planted in his head. He didn't flinch when a head rolled from its shoulders anymore - this close to the Divide, Shadetouched were plentiful, and their heads did roll.

Nekhbet grew to be a healer. His siblings grew up to be warriors and diplomats, but his parents always called him odd, their second born. While they did not endorse his career choice, they did nothing to stop him. It was his own life he was ruining, after all.

And so, when Nekhbet was gathering herbs, and the Shade sprung from the ground like a Serpent, Nekhbet did not know how to fight. Even if he did, there was no way for him to best the beast that descended upon him.

He had enough magic to repel it, once his wits were about him, and he fled home in a fit of panic. Bleeding, and black with darkness, his parents did not stoop to hear his plea. They put a chain around his neck. He was sentenced to death.

And he watched from his knees, the ax poised above his neck, as the Shade tore into their camp, and destroyed everything he once called home. His parents were among the first to die.

Nekhbet was tied, and had already accepted his death, so he watched the chaos unfold with a tight heart. But the Shade came, it destroyed, and it left Nekhbet in the middle of it all.

He didn't move for several hours.

Still chained around his neck and ankles, Nekhbet wandered out onto the Boneyard. He didn't have anywhere to go other than where his feet took him. He shuffled for days, weeks, before he saw another being.

The Shade, the same massive, infected beast that killed his clan. And it was staring right at him.

Right through him.

In the next moment, a Skydancer descended from the sky with a mighty cry, and a Pearlcatcher sprinted across the sand with calm determination. They slew the beast, and then turned to Nekhbet in awe.

The Shade cannot see him.
