The father who does not teach his children their duties is equally guilty with the children who neglect them.
RAIJIN

Poise. He knew poise was important from the first day he had taken an interest in the kites, with their long bright bodies and angles that helped them glide effortlessly through the Plateau's harsh winds. He admired how they seemed to float, suspended like magic in the clouds, held down only by the cord he held tight in his paws.

Behind him stood a small cluster of young dragons, barely grown large enough to no longer call hatchlings. A soft glow warmed his breast as he turned around to face them, bending slightly to re-attach the kite to its anchor.

He looked at them, trusting, eager. He smiled, curling his long snout slightly. They were always so eager.

To the far right of the group, a small thump caught his attention. One of the new trainees was bickering with another and had shoved them to the hard dirt. Quickly, with deft hands used to the motions, Raijin finished securing the knot and curled gently to the pair, letting the wind move his light body.

The younglings looked up as the Spiral neared, both looking guilty and nervous. Wordless, he reached a slender paw down to the downed dragon, who took it gratefully. "When you serve our god, you cannot fight amongst yourselves. The most important thing you must remember when your trainers are working with you is how they always work together to take down a foe."

The previously fallen young opened his mouth but stopped when Raijin turned to the flock of kites overhead.

"When you look at our kites, what is the first thing you notice?"

"The colors!" A voice chirped. Raijin's smile returned.

"I saw the same when I was young and hadn't learned this lesson." He couldn't move his eyes from the kites, entranced as he always found himself. "The kites have lines keeping them grounded. If a kite is without its string, it is wild, dipping and diving with the wild with no control of its own.

We all need our own line to ground us. Teamwork keeps us Wild dragons grounded. Without it-" Raijin delicately clipped the end of a kite string with a pointed claw, and it immediately surged away from the land, weaving like a drunken Imperial. "We have no control, no way to keep ourselves focused on our lives and our survival."

He nodded at the assembled dragons. "Get the kite back, we can't lose one."

Looking shocked, the flock took to the sky, immediately being swept sideways by a gust. They tumbled like leaves in the wind and Raijin shook his head. They would need his help.

Like a dart, the Spiral launched, cleaving easily through the air with his streamlined snout and weaving around the floundering trainees, using the way the wind worked around their bodies to his advantage.

His pearlescent teeth glinted in the sun as he grinned from ear to ear. He always loved flying.

The dragon quickly caught up to the released kite, snagging it's cord mid-flight. His eyes looked around swiftly for one of the trainees.

There-

Stunningly fast, Raijin's tail coiled around the edge of a wing, sending the two dropping toward the ground like a pair of heavy stones. As it rushed toward them the trainee screeched with fear, but Raijin only smiled wider before releasing his grasp on the other dragon and twirling to the ground gently.

When he reached it, he dug his long rear talons into the gritty dirt, securing himself with the kite firmly in his grasp. He watched the younger dragons all find their way safely down again before he started speaking.

"Don't forget teamwork in your future training. You guards of our deity will be like kites- he will ground you, but you must not allow your string to be cut, or he will be lost to you."

Raijin inclined his head slightly to them before returning to his kite-tending, confident the trainees would learn from his lesson. He knew at least the youngling he had dropped with would.
