GRISSOM

"There is a clarity, a brilliance to space that simply doesn't exist on earth, even on a cloudless summer's day in the Rockies, and nowhere else can you realize so fully the majesty of our Earth and be so awed at the thought that it's only one of untold thousands of planets." -Gus Grissom, Mercury 7 astronaut

Grissom's was named for the distinguished astronaut Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom, one of the original Mercury 7. He began his career as an astronaut flying in the second Mercury spaceflight: Liberty Bell 7. The flight was a success, except that a faulty hatch opened early and made the craft take on water. Liberty Bell sank, but Gus managed to survive! He was blamed for the sink by the press but it genuinely wasn't his fault.

He then flew on Gemini 3, which he named Molly Brown after the musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown, since he was frustrated after Liberty Bell sank. When NASA got mad at him, he asked them if they'd rather he named it the Titanic. NASA let him keep the name, and didn't let astronauts name their spacecraft anymore after that. Still, though, Gemini 3 was a successful flight, on which Gus and John Young tested the capabilities of the Gemini spacecraft (and ate some smuggled sandwich in space, but that's John's fault.)

Gus didn't fly again in the Gemini program, because his eye was on the prize: the Moon itself. He worked hard and managed to get his way into commanding the first crewed Apollo spaceflight, Apollo 1. Unfortunately, the Apollo command module was built badly. Bad wiring, a pure oxygen atmosphere, and a hatch that won't open don't combine well. Long story short, Gus and his Apollo 1 crew never made it to space; they died as the first astronauts to die in a spacecraft disaster.

When I went outside tonight,
the night after failing my physics final,
I couldn’t find your star.
I think it was blocked by trees and fences.
All I could find was a satellite.

I wonder if it could feel my gaze
as it traced a perfect ellipse
beyond my horizon.
