head of chemical weaponry - runesworn alumni |
Hook's Journal:
Zvi is a scholar, and a recent graduate from House Runesworn. He loves the dark arts and, like most his house, is fascinated with the Shade, but his personal favorite subject is actually other realms, and travel between them. He's the one who invited Waffle to stay with us, thanks to a friend he has who was studying the clan she came from, and he also found and invited Moose, after hearing about him from Waffle. He quizzes Waffle all the time, which makes her uneasy; he's not sure that she has realm traveled, but he says whoever gave her her name definitely has. A bunch of dragons in her home clan have names that he says come from another realm. I'm not sure how he knows they're from another realm, as they just sound like names to me; don't we all have weird names, when you actually stop and think about it? Isn't all of language weird? But he has Insights, I guess.

Anyway. Besides his odd hobbies and interests, he's also the maker and keeper of chemical weapons. What we would ever need chemical weapons for, I don't know and don't like to imagine, but somehow the whole clan feels safer for having them, and knowing we could defend ourselves if attacked. Except for me. I tried to tell Scarlett that it was probably much more dangerous to have explosives stored right underneath our lair but she waved me off as a worry wart. I was so concerned about it, actually, that my little non confrontational self questioned Histan about the wisdom of it, and though he listened to me kindly and patiently, he said, in the most respectful of tones, that though he appreciated my concerns, the chamber where the weapons were being kept was well kept, and that experts from other clans had come in to inspect it for them, and had declared it sound. "Also," he said, "Zvi knows what he's doing."
Sorry, but I can't really trust someone who thinks talking to the Shade would be a cool experience, or that Moose is anything but absolutely bonkers. Also, he always looks amused at something, like he's in on a joke no else knows, and the world is not funny enough to be constantly looking like that. Sim likes him though, and she's a level headed dragon, so maybe I'm just being paranoid. Or maybe love is blinding, I don't know. She's a pretty independant dragon, so when Zvi first got here and was all show-offish, she was was amused, and interested in his studies and his impressive degree (everyone was oohing and ahhing over it, and no one could talk about anything else for weeks), but she wasn't going to be found fawning over him like the rest. Which is probably what attracted him to her. He could have had any girl in the lair, but he wanted the one that would be a challenge. They can definitely challenge each other in wit, which is probably the only way he got Sim to give him a chance. They were just playing games with each other until he went missing one night though. He'd gone out to study the stars and conduct some experiments with some old classmates, and hadn't come back for three days, when he was only supposed to be gone for one. The first day he was missing, Sim hid her anxiety with forced laughter and confident speech. By the next day, she was down right frantic. Search parties had been sent out, but always came back empty handed. On the morning of the fourth day, when the sun was just breaking, cries arose from the watch posts that he was being brought back. He and his friends had been badly injured, and it was the family members of one of those friends that brought his burned body back to us. Sim had cried over him in relief; I'd never seen her cry before. Lycra and Minerva got him fixed back up and on his way to recovery, and we received reports from his friends later that they had all recovered as well. Whenever anyone asks him about the accident, he says he can't remember much about it. "We were testing a new compound," he tells us. "We were mixing it with different things and recording it's reactions. Something went wrong; I don't remember which mixture it was. It set off a chain reaction, I think." Everyone believes him, except for me. I told Scarlett they were probably trying to summon the Shade. She rolled her eyes at me. "You're nearly as much of a conspiracy theorist as he is," she said. I was greatly insulted. |

House Runesworn
The second young House, Runesworn, like its twin Shatterspell, takes pride in pushing the boundaries of dragon magic. Searching the small places of Sornieth for forgotten spells and phenomena, they are particularly talented at manipulating and creating charmed or cursed objects, as well, of course, as the study and use of runes. It is Runesworn who is mostly likely to develop a magical weapon, or find some way of concentrating power into an object. Often, Runesworners plunder the Shadowbinder’s domain for thrown-away artifacts, and the older students conduct a healthy trade with Lightning dragons who don’t mind dealing with temperamental magical machina. But not everyone looks kindly on Runesworn. While Shatterspell students are dangerous, they do so out of a certain lack of foresight. Runesworn pupils have been caught investigating and experimenting with dark magicks, and even attempting to commune with Shade. |
