Rumors speak of an ancient Cathedral that sits on the limestone cliffs surrounding the Lightweaver’s Beacon. In the tales, it is a place shrouded by a mysterious fog where etherial songs radiate through the halls. Orthrus knows that the rumors are true because she hatched in the Cathedral or, rather, beneath it. The Pearlcatcher’s parents were cursed to live in a labyrinth below the Cathedral of Eyes and it was here that Orthrus first broke free from her egg.

Orthrus remembers only the darkness and the cold stone beneath her. The only light in the labyrinth was that cast from the pale glow of her parents’ bioluminescent markings. Then the hatchling was stolen away, just like all of her siblings before her. She remembers the notes of an etherial song that lulled her to sleep and when the hatchling awoke, she was alone. Orthrus sat on a bed of pine needles that blanketed the floor of a redwood forest. Despite her attempts to find her way back to the Cathedral, the Pearlcatcher never saw the structure or her parents again.

The Pearlcatcher wandered the woods for days. Without an older dragon to teach her how to forage or hunt, Orthrus never knew which plants and fungi were toxic and which were safe to eat. She became sickly and weak from malnutrition and sat huddled beneath a pile of dried leaves. The young hatchling fell asleep and likely would not have woken up if another dragon hadn’t tripped over her concealed form and landed with a thud on the forest floor. Orthrus peeked from her hiding place to see a Skydancer sprawled across the ground, their wings covered with dried pine needles. They spat a few more needles from their mouth as they stood and shook off.

“Oh, sorry!” the Skydancer exclaimed, “I didn’t see you the- hey, are you alright?” Orthrus didn’t respond, instead choosing to push herself back into the pile of dried leaves as much as possible. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt you.” The Skydancer called Oren finally managed to coax the young hatchling from her hiding place and welcomed the young dragon to join a clan located in the heart of the Gladevines. The Pearlcatcher followed her timidly, but never spoke a word. Even after she healed and grew, Orthrus never spoke. Sometimes she sings and dances when there’s no one around. In the darkness, her glowing runes create eerie patterns as the young Pearlcatcher spins and it is said that her voice can lull anyone who hears it to sleep.
