《《 You find yourself in a tangled wood filled with thick mist. A figure peers at you out of the dark. You ask it timidly if it happens to be called Renegade? 》》
x
The figure becomes slightly more corporal and asks you a stiff voice, "Who's asking?"

You tell him about the books, and how Hylis sent you on a treasure hunt for his story.

"Well, that's like him, isn't it. Always so fond of adventures, even after everything that happened..." the figure sighs. "Well, if you really must know-" it lowers its head to press against yours, sharing the story through telekinesis, like a movie playing out in your mind...

Hylis jerked on his chains and strained to try to pull his feet free of the tangled branches that entrapped them.
You’re minnnne, hissed a voice that seemed to be in his head, but also nearby. Your friends, they abandoned you! They left you here! For me…

“Would you shut up and let me out of here?” Hylis demanded. He was too frustrated and angry to be very afraid; this voice sounded kind of hokey anyway.

The voice was silent for a moment, as if not expecting this kind of response. Then it hissed, Aren’t you afraid? You don’t know what I’m going to doooo to youuuuu…

“Honestly,” Hylis sighed, pausing in his tugging, “If you stopped doing the wavering, hissing thing, you’d be a lot more convincing.”

Something shifted in the tangled shrubbery nearby, and an Imperial-like form disentangled itself to stand in front of him, staring at him with big, glowing eyes. “Why do I need to convince you?” it asked in a husky voice. “Convince you of what? I’m going to destroy you. There’s no way around it."

“Honestly, the physical voice is a lot more wretched than that telepathic thing you have going on.” Which wasn’t exactly true, it was just giving Hylis a headache. “Also, I must admit, you do look kind of creepy.” This was true; it’s wings were wispy and ethereal looking, but it’s body seemed to be made up of cracked, burnt out earth, with small mushrooms poking through, and where it’s chest scales should have been, there was… nothing. Empty space, laced with dried out vines. It looked like it had come up from the ground, and it also looked like it could collapse into dust at any second.

It cocked its head at him. It’s eyes were definitely the creepiest part about it.

“Um, so,” Hylis said, breaking the long silence, “What’s your name?”

He was trying to come up with a clever way out of this. He wasn’t coming up with much.

I am nameless.

“Oh, there you go with the telepathy again. Somebody must call you something.”

I am unknowable.

“Um, that’s clearly not true, because I know you, right now. You’re a creepy mystic being made of plant matter. See? Knowable.”

It growled in frustration. “I’m not made of plants, I’m a dragon.”

“Check a mirror mate. Pretty sure you’re not.”

“I’m undead.”

“Undead plant matter?”

It drew itself up into its full height and roared through his mind, They call me, the Eater of Souls.

“Oh come on, you can do better than that.”

It went back to all fours. “I literally eat souls.”

“Hmm. Not buying it.”

It waved a talon at the area around them, and suddenly Hylis could see a myriad of brambled cages everywhere; hanging from trees, clinging to the ground, stacked on top of each other… and all of them contained dragons, inanimate, and looking none too healthy.

“What do you DO with all of them?” Hylis asked, slightly appalled.

The strange undead Imperial seemed pleased with his reaction. “I catch them. Ensnare them. I imprison them. Like I did to you. Then I suck the life out of their souls.”

“And you never let them go?” He discreetly picked at the locks on his chains.

The being frowned, and said again, louder, just in case Hylis had missed it, “I SUCK THE LIFE OUT OF THEIR SOULS.”

“You could at least let them go once you’re done.” One lock undone-

“The life comes back. Then I suck it again.”

“So you just keep them here in limbo?” Second lock undone-

“Yes.”

“That is seriously omandrake.” [author's translation: Inhumane, in Dragon Swedish]

x
“What?”

“That’s disgusting.”

“I was hoping it meant, that’s really terrible.”

“That too.”

“That’s the point.”

“That’s the only point? To be terrible? You go to all that work and no one even knows about you and no one ever sees this-” Last lock undone. Now what to do about these branches… they did seem to be loosening, since their master was distracted...

The Imperial sighed. “It’s also to keep my body… a body. Separate from the ground. Moving about. Feeling… not so undead. They give me strength. To catch more. So I can get stronger and stronger. Maybe one day, I’ll be stronger than It.”

“It?” Hylis asked. He had to keep it talking, keep it distracted...

The Imperial shrank back. “It,” it hissed quietly. “It’s what destroyed me. Keeps me not dead, not alive. It’s where the power comes from; it holds them asleep. It grows the vines. It’s inside me, I can’t get it out. I used to live, live a happy life in a body… but now, now I am pieces, held together by It, and It tells me what to do, how to survive…”

The Imperial’s voice was growing huskier and huskier, sinking deeper into it’s non-existent throat. It sounded almost as if it was… chanting. Hylis felt the same tingling in his spine that he’d felt when he’d first been caught.

“What is It?” he asked. “Some magical being? The Shadowbinder? A-”

“No, no,” The Imperial said hastily, making a quick bowing motion, “AllHailTheShadowbinderMotherOfUsAllMostWorthyOfAllBeingsForOurPraiseAndDevotion no no not her, not some dragon, It.”

Suddenly, Hylis understood; and now, he really could taste fear, like metal on his tongue.

“The Shade,” he whispered.

The trees around them shuddered, and the Imperial wailed, scrambling to put a talon over Hylis’ mouth. “It must not be known!” it whispered fiercely, “It must not be said! It should not be thought! No one can know!”

“I think that’s It talking,” Hylis said, finally wriggling free of the branches around him, which were finally loose enough. “I also think this problem is bigger than-”

The trees were still shivering, and a roaring was beginning to be heard. All the glowing mushrooms seemed to dim, and all the imprisoned dragons suddenly opened their eyes and began to struggle frantically. The Imperial’s body rose off the ground, stretching larger and smaller, it’s earth-like plates becoming fluid, the branches in it’s chest twirling out in black tendrils… It shuddered, then a great echoing voice, sounding like thousands of voices on top of each other, poured out of it’s wide open jaw.

“I AM THE END OF ALL THINGS,” it roared, “I AM THE DARKNESS, I AM THE NIGHT. I AM FEAR, AND DEATH, AND SIN. I AM-”

The Imperial choked, became suddenly more solid, and crashed to the ground. Hylis peered down at it, wondering for a moment if it was dead, but then it whispered, “See?”

“I’m-” Hylis cleared his throat a minute, as all his hair slowly relaxed from standing on end, and his pupils slowly dilated to a normal size. “I’m not sure… what I saw… what did I see?”

“It controls me,” the Imperial whispered, still laying in an awkward position on the ground, seeming more a part of it than ever. “The energy comes and goes. But It’s here. And It’s growing. More and more, everyday-”

“I think you’re probably feeding it.”

“I’m not feeding It. I’m feeding me. I’m trying to grow stronger than It, but look at me.” It tried to regain its feet, but failed. “That’s why I need your soul.”

“Uh uh. Don’t think so. We, buddy, are finding some help.”

“Help?”

“Because you need it.”

“There isn’t anyone that can help me.”

“I’m the optimistic type,” Hylis said, starting off into the forest.

“I don’t need help, don’t want help- you don’t even know where you’re going!”

“Well, my guess is, you do, and if you want my soul so bad, you’d better come with me.”

The Imperial sighed, and slowly tugged itself from the ground, where it seemed to have begun to take root.

“Wait-” it said, pausing, “How are you free?”

“I’m clever like that,” Hylis said with a shrug, still walking; then he asked, “What’s your name again?”

It sighed again. “I used to be called Renegade.”

“Nice to meet you Renegade. Actually, it wasn’t very nice, but you seem to prefer not nice things, so I guess you’re ok with my admitting that. My name is Hylis.”

“Hylis.” Renegade thought for a moment, then said, “You can call me Eater of Souls though, especially in company.”

“Fat chance.”

“At least in company?”

“Not happening.”

Renegade pulls back from you at this point, and you blink as you readjust yourself to reality.

"That's all I have for you," it says gruffly, "If you want to know anything else, you're going to have to go elsewhere. I'm tired."
It turns and fades back into the mist, and you notice a book tangled up in some thorns where it had been standing. Pick it up?
