The hatching of a truly perfect dragon is a rare thing indeed. Hoarfrost was one such rare hatchling. Born with pure colours and perfect proportions, she was prized by her creators. They raised her to believe she had no faults or flaws - they raised her to be a genuine narcissist.

To a lesser extent, she was also prized by her clan, the leaders of which saw her potential as a political marriage candidate. Her beauty made her desirable to the males of other clans - there was the clear potential for such a mating to form an alliance between their own clan and another (preferably more powerful) clan.

Candidates presented themselves to her, wooing her with gems and treasure, with fine clothes and fine foods. She had no interest in them on an emotional level. She would toy with them for a time - indulge their advances, enjoy their gifts, and even pretend to reciprocate their affection.

However, when she grew bored, or when a more attractive candidate presented himself, she had no qualms about severing ties. Severing ties neatly and emotionlessly, leaving her former suitor heartbroken.

She was a talented actress indeed. One candidate, a deeply passionate Tundra, fell completely under her spell - so much so that when she abruptly ended their relationship, he abruptly ended his own life. If anything, she found it amusing. It became a game of sorts - how many dragons could she thoroughly destroy? How many dragons could she drive to madness, to depression, to desperation, to end their own lives?

The answer was seven. Seven more suitors, each carelessly discarded after a short fling that had been coldly calculated to break their hearts.

The seventh, a Fae, froze himself with magic, stating in a final letter that the icy embrace of death would be warmer than her frigid heart. That letter galvanized the clan. At last, their leaders realized that they would never be able to marry Hoarfrost off – be it as a political match or as any match at all.

She was... encouraged to leave the clan, and did so willingly, bored of the frigid wastelands and unattractive dragons. As a clanless traveller, her game changed, but it was no less twisted.

Luring a hardworking dragon away from his clan. Turning two potential suitors against one-another, until they quite literally tore one another apart. Coercing dragons to steal from their clans, to engage in infidelity, or even to kill their mates.

A challenging game, but an engaging one. A game that satisfied her twisted, emotionless mind. Until one jilted suitor nearly killed her, mutilating her body and leaving her to die.

An Unrepentant dragon found her - a dragon who desired beauty, desired perfection, and had never seen a creature as fair as Hoarfrost. His name was Nightshade.

At his insistence, she was given healing. At his insistence, she was permitted to join the clan. At his instance, she was grudgingly tolerated. When her story was revealed, however, the Unrepentant Clan no longer merely tolerated her - they welcomed her as one of their own.

Though her games of heartbreak are well understood within the Clan of Second Chances, there are still those dragons who court her and proposition her, enthralled by her beauty. She turns them all aside - she only has interest in the one who saved her, the one nearly as perfect as Hoarfrost herself.

Nightshade is as vain as she is, and quite nearly as cold. Their relationship is not romantic in nature - in fact it has no emotional involvement whatsoever. Theirs is a relationship of mutual sociopathy, feeding one-another's vanity and ego, assuring them both of their perfection.

He holds her genuine interest, for now. She intends to stay with him only as long as said interest persists - and he is well aware of that. When she tires of Nightshade, she will leave him as she has all the others. It is likely that she will destroy him, break his heart and drive him to despair - perhaps even to harm.

Whether she succeeds or fails, she will leave the clan and move on to another. She is confident that she will be able to escape the aftermath unscathed, no matter what tragedy might befall her mate. After all, the Unrepentant dragons are well aware of the risks that accompany her affection.

It's likely that she isn't wrong.

The Skydancer has discovered that the primary adversary to her cruelty is Thundercloud. The Coatl, though herself an unkind and aloof gossip, sees Hoarfrost's behavior as frankly reprehensible - even among a clan of monsters. Perhaps the problem is that, while the Skydancer is emotionless, the Coatl is governed by her emotions.

As such, their relationship is one of veiled threats and mutual sabotage.

Hoarfrost believes herself to be perfect - but can any creature truly be perfect without a heart?
