Biography

Spike

Clan Liaison | Pseudo-Vampyre
—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–——–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—
There are numerous Plague dragons so tainted by their environment that they become something monstrous. One of these terrible creatures is the Vampyre. It feeds on live prey, sometimes even other dragons, usually causing anemia, hypovolemia, vitamin deficiencies, and electrolyte imbalances, which can manifest in the form of bloodlust until the victim's eventual death.

Spike was just an infant when he encountered one of these creatures. He and his nestmates were being taken from their home in the Sunbeam Ruins to the Trading Post where they were hopefully destined to find new homes. Their caravan was ambushed by a hungry Vampyre who charged from the woods and attacked the adult dragons escorting the youngsters. Spike's siblings scattered, running in fear of the monster. Spike hid in the bushes and watched in horror as the creature brought down his traveling companions and drained them of their blood, gorging himself on their raw flesh. When the monster had eaten his fill and slunk back off into the woods, Spike crept from his hiding place. There was blood everywhere though he barely noticed it as he crept forward to inspect his guardians dead bodies. The poor hatchling was in shock and didn't know what else to do, so he laid down beside his fallen protectors, not caring that he was laying in pools of infected blood.

When a scouting party finally came across the carnage, they found the poor hatchling succumbing to the disease brought on by the tainted blood he'd been covered in. They quickly rushed him to the Nature lands, hoping that Nature magic might be able to remove the taint of Plague. That's how he found himself in Tyna's clan. Gaia and Eugene worked long into the night with healing salves and nature magic alike and were able to save the little dragon, though not without some lasting side effects.

While not a true Vampyre, Spike remains tainted by his exposure to the Vampyre's infection, though strong Nature magic keeps him alive. He prefers to be nocturnal, slinking about in the shadows as strong sunlight causes him discomfort - not a huge problem in the depths of the Veridian Labyrinth, but it does make him reluctant to ever return to his birth lands. He also has a preference for raw meat, though secretly, he acknowledges that it doesn't fully quench the thirst he feels deep inside. He refuses to ever prey upon another dragon, though he is plagued by nightmares of chasing his clanmates through the woods and drinking his fill of their blood, until he is finally sated.

His vampiric nature makes him the perfect dragon to act as a liaison between Tyna's clan and the Plague lands, dealing with dragons that the others of his clan would find too distasteful. The Plague lands offer much temptation to give into his bloodthirsty nature though, so he employed some skilled mages to craft a spell that causes him severe pain if he ever tries to injure another dragon.

Spike has a good heart, despite his affliction, and he always tries to help those he cares about - which is what led Ferris to choose him as a mate. So far, their hatchlings appear unaffected by Spike's vampirism. His best friend is Ennoia and the two often pair up as hunting partners.
