THE LIGHT BEARER

Despite her lineage as a Light dragon and the sunlit glow of her eyes, Rapunzel hatched beneath a sky shrouded by fog. The first rays of light that streamed through the crack in her egg were muted and pale. “The sunlight doesn’t shine here,” Rapunzel’s father would say and the hatchling grew up with only stories of the glowing orb that lit and heated the land.

The young Imperial dreamed of the day she would travel beyond the fog and explore lands where the sun burned brightly in the sky. Time and again Rapunzel attempted to leave the Cathedral where she was born, but she continually became trapped in the mists. Confused and disorientated, she would wander through the blanket of white fog for hours until she found herself right back where she started. “I don’t understand,” she muttered to herself. Guests came and left from the Cathedral and Rapunzel wondered how they managed to find their way through the fog. “Easy!” one of the guests responded when the Imperial asked, “I have an invitation.” They held up a golden envelope and pulled free a folded piece of parchment. “It’s. . blank,” Rapunzel noted as she stared at the paper with a puzzled expression. “See, there’s your problem,” the guest replied “you believe that you’re lost and therefore you are.” Before the Imperial could ask any more questions, the other dragon tucked the invitation back into their silks and disappeared into the crowd.

After that, Rapunzel’s dreams began turning into nightmares. In her sleep, she would wander aimlessly through the fog, destined never to set her sights upon the sun. The nightmares only became worse when Rapunzel’s siblings began leaving the Cathedral; leaving their sibling behind. Rapunzel wandered the fog in her dreams, her vision filled only with a blinding whiteness until one night she saw a faint shadow and the mists parted to reveal another Imperial whose form appeared to blend into the fog. Rapunzel squinted at the other dragon, “who are you?” she questioned, “are you lost too?”

“Not lost,” the white dragon replied, “just wandering. The old dragon's eyes were clouded and he stared at the younger dragon with an unfocused gaze. "You. . you're blind," Rapunzel whispered and the dragon gave her a smile in return. "You don't need your sight to navigate the fog, just let the wind carry you where you want to go. You’ll see it someday, you know.” Rapunzel gave the dragon a confused look. “The sun,” he responded. “Wait! How do you know-“ before she could finish asking, the other dragon vanished once more.

Rapunzel woke from her dream and stared up at the dull light that streamed through the stained glass windows of the Cathedral. Perhaps today. . . Rapunzel couldn't wait, she leapt into the swirling fog but she still couldn't see more than a few inches ahead. "No," the Imperial thought to herself, "I will see the sun today." She closed her eyes and felt the wind lift beneath her wings. Then she felt. . warmth? When she opened her eyes again, Rapunzel saw the blue sky and a brilliant orb of light that shown brightly. She laughed and twirled through the air under the sun. How could she have lived so long without it?

Perhaps there were other hatchlings who lived without seeing the light; without believing they would ever be capable of doing so. From the moment Rapunzel first glimpsed the sun, she made up her mind to travel the land and bring the gift of sunlight to even the darkest parts of Sornieth. She brought the light in egg-shaped candles that she would leave during the night. "I don't see anything" some dragons would say. "You need to believe you'll see the light," Rapunzel would reply, "and then you will."
