Books, myths, legends. Those were the things that first piqued her curiosity. As a hatchling, she would read about ancient dragons and secret societies who waged war on one another. It was a bunch of bunk, she had been told, it was never true, nor would it ever be. But she remembered the hushed voices when she hatched, and days after. The whisperings, the wondering, no one sure where he colors had come from. She hadn’t understood it, why they had wondered, why they never said anything out loud. Even her own parents had been quiet, though they would reassure her nothing was wrong. She knew why they would be confused, looking at their own bright colors, and the darker colors of most of her siblings, she would wonder, too. Until she read of the dragons, who were all a striking white and red, and who donned long coats and hoods, concealing their identities. She liked to think that she was one of them, with her odd coloration. She liked to think that, until the day she saw him . Her eyes had widened, and her pulse quickened. He was old, she could tell from his slowed movements, but there he was. White and red, with his long coat and hood pulled up, was he really an assassin? She had no time to think about it. The old dragon came under attack and so she, being the naive young dragon she was, jumped into the fray.

With the attacker beaten back, the old one had looked at her, surprised, but had asked her to accompany him. He told her of the assassins, and how they had been pushed to the brink, and how they had found no recruits in years, and then he asked her. He asked if she would be trained, if she would join the order. She never returned to her old clan.

Years later Aurelia was able to achieve the rank of master, one of the first in several generations, but the occasion was bittersweet. Her own master died that same day, passing the torch to her. The Skydancer now leads the assassin order, blending in with a new clan in the Ashfall Waste, and gathering more and more dragons. Under Aurelia, the order is beginning to flourish, and gain a foothold in Sorneith once again.
