pras' personal lore:

i needed a lore repository for onsite, in case i finish my lore and someone wants a glossary/explanation of the labyrinth. if/when i commission a lair map, or when i start writing the Big Story, it'll go in her bio. her name is "lorekeeper" in ursegal, and in-lore, she's a ghostly figure seen wandering the labyrinth occasionally and writing. she's theorised to be a remnant of one of the ancient ages, like yatorsa and the Spirit (yatorsa is from a much more recent time than the spirit, though still incredibly ancient. think "the first few decades/centuries after dragons being made"). clan members occasionally leave out candles and pieces of charcoal for her writing, which she kind of. absorbs. not everyone believes in her though

if you're reading this for lore: this is gonna be Very Rough since while ive had these ideas for a while now, i haven't quite got the hang of writing them down. so most of this is copy/pasted from discord.

also, please don't copy these ideas! i do want to share my lore, but it's stuff i've created for myself, and if you want in on it, you're welcome to message me about it! i'd love to collaborate on things :D

ok so its like. the spectral remains of an inhabitant or magical entity of an ancient pre-pre-apocalypse library/labyrinth has been preserved thru the library's inherent magic™ & has become essentially like... a god/spirit?

but anyway a tiny number of things from the library have been taken/lost over the ages but every so often it'll get found by a dragon or clan and it has this like... homing beacon? compulsion? an effect on the possessors of the item and they get drawn to the labyrinth to return it, and end up getting drawn under the spell of the labyrinth and start to worship the spirit through the incredible power of will the spirit has and the unimaginable incomprehensible knowledge it holds. it works w light lore since that's all about knowledge and scholars and the spirit has So Much Knowledge oh my god.

but it!! cant really communicate it because its a spirit and cant speak dragon language.
but the spirit can communicate through a medium! which is johana, and which is why the clan who found an object (the precursor to this clan! but not igris or her followers, or the many others who've joined later) didn't get killed and maybe eaten by the slightly-feral mutant deeps cultists living in the caverns below the labyrinth, led by igris, who was drawn to the spirit as her charge and kinda collected a bunch of nasty weirdos on the way. igris has been waiting for a huge ridiculous amount of time for someone who can communicate with the spirit, since the medium there (jares) is totally incapable of that, and mostly just wants to be left alone to eat mushrooms. the mutations mentioned come from the magic of the labyrinth: since the deeps have been there for so long and are so physically and spiritually/emotionally close to the spirit, and most haven't really been eating anything substantial as they've come to subsist off the spirit (except any unfortunates who wandered in; some of them are just nasty like that); the close link to the magic of the spirit/labyrinth causes them improbable long life and strange traits/features so they look all greebly and creepy and barely like dragons at all in fun individual ways. this is my excuse to have creepy weird dragons without the hassle of moving to plague.

so the spirit's geas imposes the need to protect the knowledge of the labyrinth and of the spirit, and sparing you the clan politics and a big kerfuffle i might outline later, the dragons ended up split into three groups. first is surfacers, who were like "okay this isn't our jam and we can't really leave but we're not equipped to study and protect stuff and our services are better put to use up top", and so converted the ruins on the surface of the labyrinth into a lodge and teahouse (and a surrounding village), offering an oasis for travellers passing through the hewn city - these surfacers were typically the merchants and ambassadors of the former clan, as well as craftsfolk and artists. next are the scholars, of which there are dawn and dusk houses, signifying how close they are to the spirit and their attitude towards protecting knowledge - dawns want to protect knowledge by sharing it and ensuring it's never forgotten, while dusks want to protect it in a more literal sense by keeping it safe and hidden. dusks tend to be deeper in the labyrinth. dusks have a bit of a superiority thing, but dawns don't tend to view themselves too differently from dusks. this is mainly what the aforementioned Kerfuffle was about - the interpretation of "knowledge" and "protection". last is the deeps circle, who are the semi-feral circle down the very bottom of the labyrinth, living closest to the spirit and who have been here longest (with a few exceptions of dragons who got way too into the whole "converting to a cult" thing and joined the deeps). while there's no one really "in charge" of the other circles, as they're largely self-governing and can work together pretty well, in the deeps, igris is The Boss. there are also some dragons who don't fully fit into any circle; they keep things running smoothly; couriers, warriors, priests, and guards.

it's also worth mentioning that i view my lair as only a select handful of my actual clan; there are more dragons in the hidden labyrinth clan than the 40-odd permadragons i have here. namely: a modest surface village around the lodge and library living in refurbished and restored ruins, who welcome travellers and are generally good folk (many of them have little to no understanding of what goes on in the labyrinth, and usually have little desire to learn); a small pack of mirrors in the deeps, led by ninatek; a group of priests, led by lireyezrael, who spread light (representing the spirit) around the labyrinth and to travellers; and a whole heck of a lot of scholars, archivists, and archaeologists.
