Since Trana was very young, she showed an exceptional liking (some would say abnormal obsession, but whatever) for things that flew. She had an intuitive grasp for just how dragons moved through the air, and how to replicate the effect in almost anything. At the tender age of just a few months, her intricate, perfect kites, controlled by a complicated apparatus she designed entirely by herself, had won many prizes and brought a little taste of fame to the then small crew. As Zyphira's daughter, she was well on her way to becoming the next leader. Trana was destined for great things, and she knew it. Going on to join the High Council, she flew into her future on wings she not only used, but understood. It was a cliche, but her life was complete and the sky really was the limit.
Then Winddancer came to the clan. Winddancer was a much older fae who didn't think much of Trana, who was used to being adored by everyone. Trana could deal with this; some dragons were hard to impress.
What she couldn't deal with was when Winddancer entranced her mother, stealing her away from her mate and driving a line through the family. The leading pair feuded, Trana retreated into her inventions and studies, becoming as absorbed and irritable as the Arcanist, determined to be seen and desperate for attention.
Eventually, Winddancer left in the night (the stinking coward) and things slowly, slowly went back to normal. But the damage was done.
Bent over rolls of parchment and scribbling frantically, her thin claws stained with ink and bruises from failed experiments, the adolescent Trana was a strange ghost of her younger self. She ran around her cave day and night, carrying armfuls of supplies and scrolls, flipping frantically through books for diagrams and equations, skipping sleep for days until she collapsed from exhaustion. Both Windelle and Swath decided the best thing to do was to leave her alone. She would recover in time, surely. The royal family was back together and everything was okay again.
For a while, everything really was all right. Trana began to be more like herself again, proudly showing off her inventions and participating in the Council. Windelle began to plan when Trana would take over as leader. But it couldn't last. Windling found that before she broke with Winddancer, she became pregnant with three eggs. According to clan law, the female in that nest would be the heir, not Trana. Windelle tried to hide it to delay Trana's pain, but it was useless.
Once again, her hopes were dashed to pieces and her talents were smothered under the presence the new royal hatchlings. Skycloud and Skydance, the males, were insufferable enough, but worst of all that little pest Skylar, the usurping half-sister. The adolescent Trana hated Skywing with every drop she could muster, becoming bitter and jealous, never missing a chance to scare the hatchling or push her around. Windelle did her best to ignore it, hoping that Trana would get over her hatred. She did not.
Skylar grew up rapidly and took over as leader at a young age. Trana hated every moment of it, seeing the little worm lording it around the clan. She wasn't even pure royal, for crying out loud! She was half-common, and that particular commoner was a especially dreadful specimen. Trana's rage bubbled like lava beneath her skin, waiting to burst out. She had to do something.
Murder. That word had been flitting around Trana's mind for a long time, only really materializing at that moment. She knew it wouldn't be easy. She knew it would take planning, calculation, invention, and innovation. She knew it would test her skills to the very limit.
But that was what she liked best.
