Ethral had always been obsessed with insects, especially those that lived in colonies. Their ability to all work together perfectly to benefit each other with no question was admirable, and desirable. She became obsessed with trying to recreate that in dragons, to make a perfectly functioning society, and then spread it all throughout Sorneith as the queen of the Holy Hivemind. Magically fusing themself with an insect, Ethral became mutated and found that she could see and hear things normal dragons couldn't. She began to obsess with insects and the concept of a hivemind, and that dragons who can connect in any way to the hivemind are more powerful than those who cannot. Fueled by her hallucinations, she began to restructure her lair and the dragons she kept around her. Only powerful mages and those born special were allowed to stay and learn the ways of the holy hive. Dragons soon took on traits and abilities of wasps and bees, turning their once scenic lair into an imposing chitinous palace.

In finding that their new goal to create the most powerful dragons to connect to Ethral's hivemind, they found it aligned with the plague flights goals. So the lair now became a dual loyalty flight. Magic and mutation to rise above all others.
