Biography
Athena
The Burnished Knight |
History
Athena is certainly A Fighter.
Both Spitz and Arthur had been surprised when she and her sister both hatched as Skydancers, but that only caused the two of them to feel more strongly about what they hoped the girls would do. Spitz hoped that her daughters would follow her into the more hands-on tinkering and engineering trades, while it was Arthur’s wish that they would tread the more elegant path (as much as he loves Spitz, he would like to be able to see his daughters’ colorations most of the time; occasionally he forgets the hues of his mate’s body under the layer of dirt).
Then Athena picked up a sword.
It was the end of her first month, right as she was learning how to fly and refining her coordination. The blade had been accidentally dropped by Valmai during the Coatl’s trek home after a training session. Athena first almost took her own wing off, then proceeded to narrowly miss beheading her sister. Needless to say, the weapon was soon taken away from her.
That incident both sparked and solidified Athena’s interest in fighting and weaponry. Her parents wisely decided to send her off to training as soon as she reached the necessary age. Thea had left for the Expanse by then, so her training also served as a distraction to keep her from missing her sister and causing mayhem around the lair- there were already enough dragons doing that.
The Skydancer learned quickly and within the year had studied under all of the clan’s warriors to learn their tricks. She was ravenous for information and snuck off one night for the Farm, seeking Bea’s and the others’ expertise. She nearly died multiple times on the way but that’s neither here nor there. Her experiences on the road would prove useful in her education, no matter how much worry her impromptu trip caused back home.
Since she was wandering on her way over and she didn’t remember the exact directions, word of her disappearance preceded her arrival at the Farm. She received a telling-off from multiple family members, but in the end managed to convince the fighters there to give her quick crash courses. (She...didn’t really take ‘no’ for an answer.) She stayed in the Expanse for a good many months, happily reunited with Thea along the way, and once she’d ‘graduated’ there she was escorted happily back home.
Her parents were eagerly waiting for her, and both were impressed when she showed them her new skills. Serakem saw her demonstration as well and offered Athena the position of Burnished Knight. It was an honor that Athena had never even dared dream of; the group of Knights were among the clan’s most skilled fighters, no- among the region’s most skilled fighters. The young Skydancer had never been one to brag or exaggerate her skills, and though of course she was aware of the Knights’ symbolism, she never set her goals unrealistically high. Her skills were more important to her than a title either way but now that it was offered she couldn’t refuse. Spitz locked herself up in her workshop for days afterwards, tinkering away, while Arthur collected silk and dye ingredients and worked closely with Jubilee for the same duration of time. In the end Athena’s mother presented her with an enhanced relic - the Goldslab Wingspan she’d found long ago - that she could store energy in and that also had protection charms imbued into the stone. Afterwards, Arthur approached her and quietly held out two delicate bundles of silk. Athena took both gifts gratefully and created the rest of her wardrobe around them and the burnished armor Shard had given her.
It made for a clunky outfit, but Athena loves it.
Athena is overall a simple dragon. She has a very straightforward mindset and tends to bull her way through problems rather than taking the time to think them through. That’s not to say she’s dimwitted, she just prefers to let her strength and skill do the problem solving. She loves a good brawl and is usually the first to arrive to the battlefield.
How To Get Athena To Fight A Thing:
1) Hand her her sword.
2) Point her in the direction of the Thing.
3) Set her loose.
Most instances usually end up going two ways:
“Hey look there’s an enemy-”
“atHENA SMASH!!”
“W-Wait no oh there she goes okay…”
or
[lots of yelling and screeching]
“DEATH FROM ABOVE!!”
[loud crashing noises]
[small explosion]
“Well, at least she’s not in the lair this time…”
Her biggest weakness is the fact that she tends to ‘swing first, ask questions later’, so one of the other fighters usually keeps a close eye on her when the battle winds down to make sure she doesn’t accidentally kill any hostages. Her biggest pride is her ever-expanding weapons and armor collection. It’s taking up her whole room but it’s not big enough. When she’s not fighting she goes off scavenging with Ava to try and find new pieces for it.
