Cleaver is a dragon reanimated, kept alive by love and her own careful magical attention. she captures the spirit of this lair's beginnings in Wind, and through the power of the Catacombs, she is able to maintain a tether between deceased dragons' collective memories of the way things were, and the elemental tides that affect the current beings of this world.
in a way then, she IS the catacombs. her essence permeates these walls of stone. she keeps the old stories. she sings the old songs. the spirits of her family stick close by her. she was once afraid, but she took that fear and turned it into her own brand of faith. it is easier said than done, and some days, the fear still comes back - she'll find herself terrified in the tunnels she was there for the creation of, fearful in her own home. but she chooses now to meet that fear with compassion, and reassurance that things will be okay - we are strong now, we are brave. but it's okay to feel weak. you can still make it, darling, you don't have to be so meek.

cleaver, reticent to forge new bonds after losing nearly all the original members of her clan, used to resent the freshly recruited members of clan ulna for not comparing to her idealized recollections of her dead companions. over time, however, she began to see that this new attempt at being a family might not end up fruitless after all. she had grown new means of connecting with the world, and even went on to meet new dragons who, despite how long cleaver had tried to deny herself the warmth of belonging by building up an unfriendly outer shell, became clanmates that felt like home.

she bears scars on her body and soul from the battles she has fought and the precious things she has lost. the effort she put into overcoming adversity made her stronger; but in the aftermath of disaster, grief and anger bogged her down, and weakened her resolve.
some days were easier than others. some days, even in that period, were okay. some days she could barely get herself to move at all. she hid in the shadow of her battlepartner Adja, hoping that if she held REAL still for a REAL long time, right next to her closest companion - the only other dragon surviving the fate that befell their previous family, clan ulna - then maybe somehow, eventually, she would be able to feel some semblance of rest.

when it got Really bad, she would isolate herself even from Adja, to count rocks in the woods, or reorganize the clan's stores of goods... "occupy me if you don't want to get stuck remembering the past," her thoughts would taunt her. and still, another inner voice would answer back, "you're not alone, you know? there is someone who will be delighted to know that you're still keeping on."

cleaver is an extraordinary fighter. she's much smaller than many of her clanmates (Guardians, Imperials) and, despite the connection to spirit she channels through the Catacombs, is deathly frightened of the Shade & other such monstrous energies that lurk in the ruins of the Hewn City. cleaver's happiness can be easy to disrupt (something she is working on!); her desire to unearth and destroy the thing responsible for killing her previous clanmates, however, is unwavering. she's training to overwrite a previous nasty habit of detaching from herself to act as a puppet of the fight - a risky practice, but the resultant power boost, lack of exhaustion, and avoidance of her own painful feelings nearly caused cleaver to drive herself into the ground pursuing it.

instead of driving oneself into the ground, it is better to ground oneself. remember where you are now. remember who's beside you. in learning to ground herself, cleaver looked to adja. they had spent countless moons together, training to fight the ever-stronger enemies they encountered around their Hewn City home & in the haunted, semi-corporeal Cradlewood bordered it, and through it all, Adja was always there to bring Cleaver back to herself & help her avoid situations which would cause cleaver to delve into that self-injurous state of mind. "i know who you are. we have a family to come home to again."

she looks very "early FR classic" without her apparel on :)

...since 2020 i have had a framed painting of her at the top of my stairs & i look at it every day

she may not have the prettiest or most popular genes, but she is very dear to me

funnily enough, her outfit is one of my highest-coverage customizations.
