______ Scincus regarded his new trainers with no small amount of distrust. Courant was already lost; he could see it in her eyes. She yearned to wield her sword with as much deadly skill as the Wildclaw wielded her trident. He would learn the Wildclaw was named Marisol and referred to her as much. He did not defer to her as his friends did. She was no master to him.

______ He could not help the way he scoffed at the way Saphiro mimicked the Ridgeback's every movement. Scincus knew far too well the danger of trusting blindly. No, he would not be so easily swayed by complete strangers.

______ "She's a hard **** to swallow, isn't she?"
Scincus jumped at the incorporeal voice. Scincus turned. A towering Guardian spoke from behind the cloak of darkness, his murky green hide and soil wings acting as camouflage in the dense forest. His intense gaze lay not on him but on the training his friends were receiving. The scorn on his face was palpable. Scincus nodded in agreement. The Guardian caught the movement.

"Not everyone fights for the same reason. For your friend," he said, pointing to Courant,"who fights with the dream of becoming invincible, Marisol is the perfect trainer. And Haze will do well with a hesitant fighter like your bogsneak friend. But you are not them. You are neither naive or bloodthirsty and neither Haze nor Marisol have the ability train you effectively."

"But you can?" Scincus scoffed. The Guardian regarded him for a moment and smiled.

"You are here for a reason, Tundra. Or did you not come of your own free will?"
Scincus felt his insides grow cold. He hated that the dragon was so smug in his assessment of him. He hated it even more that he was right. He had come for a reason.

"I can teach you how to protect the ones you love so they are never taken again."
Scincus whirled on the Guardian, his face stricken. His chest heaved with grief.

"You know nothing!" Scincus hissed. His voice wavered and he dared not utter another word.

"Perhaps not," he whispered. "Or perhaps I understand far too well."

The Guardian left then, slipping back into the inky blackness of the forest. Scincus hesitated for just a moment. He was torn between leaving his friends and following the one dragon who could truly teach him. The decision came easier than he thought. With a wave and a silent goodbye, Scincus disappeared into the forest. The Guardian known as Lichen was waiting for him.
