Biography
KHOSTRIOR
Astronomer | Bold | Enthusiastic | Openhearted | Proud
~~~~~~~~ |
LORE Unless you know her family history, few would suspect that Khostrior has relatives among the dragons of the Suncircle. The clan's first mediator, Kyril, is her father, and the clan librarian Sincerus is her nestmate. Instead of her living relatives, Khostrior resembles a dead one - she is almost identical to her mother, Mundus, who perished in the failed coup that overthrew her birth clan and drove her brother into exile lest he perish in a cloud of supernatural cold that not even an Ice dragon could fight. Khostrior prefers to keep her familial connections under wraps, but it was she who alerted the clan leader to the tragedy that befell their allies in the Southern Icefield and paved the way for the survivors to resettle in the Suncircle. Of the five dragons who arrived, only Sincerus and Circe remain. Some have moved onto other clans, while some perished due to their injuries. Khostrior knows she did all she could, but is often haunted by grief and doubt. But one day, she had a realization. If such a tragedy could have been foreseen, more lives could have been saved. Motivated by grief and a hunger for knowledge, she climbed to the top of Pulchrior's tower and begged to be instructed in astronomy - both the science and the art. Moved by Khostrior's passion for his favorite subject, and sympathetic with her grief over her shattered family, Pulchrior taught Khostrior everything he knew. To this day, she is one of the few dragons in the Suncircle who have been trained by Pulchrior himself, and the only student of his who was not related to him by blood. But no matter how hard she studied, how diligently she worked, the art of predictive magic eluded her. Khostrior did not possess the gift of prophecy, and for a brief time she was enraged that her studies had failed to give her the divine insight she desired. Once her anger fizzled, it turned rapidly to shame. She could never have saved her family. It had been pointless for her to try. It took the arrival of a new dragon in the clan to show Khostrior that her training and passion, while unable to grant her the insight she so desperately sought, was not wasted. Byzantium studied the stars for the love of them, not because he had to, but his contributions to astronomy were no less valuable because of it. He studied the stars to understand the mysteries of the past, and while the mysteries of the future were denied to Khostrior, there was nothing barring her from using them to gain insight into the present. Filled with relief and a new sense of purpose, Khostrior shifted her focus and began studying the portents scattered through the vastness of space - whispers of the things that were happening now, in far-off places, that the stars spoke of amongst themselves and communicated to few on earth. It required a different kind of insight, and an inner stillness that Khostrior had long denied herself, but when the first whispers of starlight music filtered through the night to reach her ears, she couldn't help feeling like she was finally home. | ~~~~~~ |
