In my dreams, there is the sea calling to me,
and it's voice is the lord of the sea and it's voice is nothing at all.

blankblank There was a dragon in the deep, and within them was a great wellspring of grief.

Abyssal was swirling water, they were the undercurrent that bit at unwary life. They were made of shadow and all the broken things of the world, lost away to the tides. Abyssal was utterly alone.

The warm tides that swirled down from the shore often sang to him, whispering promises of things Abyssal could not bear to have. Grieve for the summers you will not live within. Mourn the sunlight, sunshine, sunbursts. Sunlight, sunlight… The memory of warmth on ones scales, of light so bright as if to burn.

The deep tides took Abyssal further into their depths, savouring his despair. It was theirs to have, it was theirs to cherish. Love him, love him, love us. Had they not given Abyssal everything they had? Sheltered him from the sea up above that would not favour him as they did? He was not of the sea, not born to be anyway, with eyes a rich purple instead of the blue they knew. But they made him their own. They swept away what he had despised, wiped him clean. Salt scrubs all wounds.

Abyssal, they sang. Abyss. Your sorrow runs as deep as our currents.

Abyssal was shade, was shadow. They were as fluid as the sea, as fleeting as the life that swirled in and out of the deep. They had known land, once. They had known the shore, its kiss on their claws. They had known what it was like to swim with purpose, before they were thought only. Before they let the tides take them where it pleased.

The tide had taken away the memory of their grief.

It still clung to Abyssal’s scales, the fog of a recollection they could not grasp before it was born away on a current. But the source of that grief, the wellspring of it, was lost to them now. They were made of water. Abyssal was a sea, an ocean. A storm.

For isn’t that where all water goes, inevitably? Ocean, vapor, raindrop. Repeat. And, truly, what was the difference between the current of the sea and the current of the clouds, when one was born of wings besides. They were taken, they were thrown, they felt the storm snap and shatter and then break.

Abyssal fell, as ethereal as a breeze, and then came to a painful, material tangibility on the boards of a ship. It had felt like dying, yet it too felt like being born again. The storm had broken, and Abyssal had broken with it. Their claws felt too solid gauging across the wood of the vessel, their wings felt limp without the water to buoy them. This was a new kind of despair, and it ached in every fiber of Abyssal’s body.

They existed, they existed, they were real and solid and alive.

To Abyssal, there was no greater tragedy.
