Biography
Shade
Clan Founder and Leader
One second--nothing. The next--a bombardment of the senses as his abandoned egg cracked open.
The helpless fae struck out, unsure how the world worked, but instinctively aware that he had to get free of the prison he had known in the egg. His early days passed in a dire state of near-starvation. He was alone. He nipped up the few insects that foolishly wandered too near, but his stomach was never satisfied. He needed to help himself; the world would not throw everything he would need into his path. But how does one begin to build a life in the barren crags of the Southern Icefield? Days blurred together. Eventually he struck out on his own. He knew not where he was, but it didn't matter: there would be no escape for him from the stormy mountains anyway. He settled in a tunnel system and made a nest, unsure how he could continue this way in the unforgiving cold. Until she showed up. The fae didn't know what to make of her. Tundras were indigenous to the Southern Icefield, but this one had found its way to the mouth of the cave in which he was resting. She had an amiable countenance, and she seemed interested in his strange sort of home. "Hello," she murmured in perfect draconian. "Who are you?" The fae was puzzled. "Who?" he repeated, half to himself. "Who am I?" She was patient. "Yes, who?" she repeated with a small grin. "What's your name; why are you here; what do you do?" He was speechless. Who am I? he thought. He had to answer somehow. "I--I'm Shade," he replied, naming himself on the spot after the darkness he clung to in his cave, "and I'm here to survive." "Is that all?" She seemed thoughtful. "Don't you want to do more than just survive?" The tundra was only confusing him more. "What else is there?" he asked tersely, crests pulling back slightly. |
"Well.." She shifted her feet, considering. "Don't you want to see the world? Meet new dragons? Accomplish something?"
"Like what?" She blinked. "I don't know, anything. I know the dragons up north in the Ashfall Waste tend to dedicate themselves to metalwork. The Tidelord's children work to become better oracles. I want to study more about Sornieth." Shade couldn't respond. He had grown up alone, so he had no idea what half of those words meant. "May I come in?" the Tundra finally asked. He scooted backward and held out a wing to invite her in, though not entirely wanting her company. "I'm Calahan, by the way," she told him as she settled into a furry lump on the cavern floor. "Do you live alone here?" He nodded. "Look, I really should be out hunting; I haven't eaten yet today so--" "Oh, I'll come too. I can forage for some berries," Calahan interrupted serenely. From that moment, through much grumbling and attempts to shake her off his tail, Calahan never left Shade's side. |

Shade is a pessimistic introvert who never outgrew his emo phase. He can barely stand half the dragons he leads, but they're all still devoted to him, and he regards them affectionately as "his little bunch of idiots". Shade is actually quite brilliant, a natural leader if not for his lack of patience and compassion.
