Rukh is a natural mirror-guardian cross: much larger and more heavy-set than a mirrror, slimmer and less scaly than a guardian. Her horns are slightly branched, almost knobbly, and while she has a mirror's second set of eyes, they're barely functional. Hybrids between dragons of such different breeds are... generally not a good idea, at least without magical help. Rukh lucked out; she's mostly just a small, oddly smooth guardian with too-small wings. Her sisters, though? Not so much. Alrescha seemed fine at first, but as she grew it quickly became clear that her limbs would not be strong enough to carry her adult weight. Pia was sickly from the start, and no amount of medical attention seemed to be able to to keep her comfortable. It... broke their parents, in some ways. They were already young, inexperienced, and had little in the way of social support - suddenly having three unplanned hatchlings, two with severe health problems, could never have ended well. For anyone. It started with late-night arguments - in theory well after the sisters had gone to sleep, but an hours-long row tends to be difficult to block out. Hadar, their father, was (and remains) a devout Plague dragon through and through: if their children were too weak to survive, then that was the way it had to be - this was what the Plaguebringer had intended, and to defy her will would be blasphemy. Azmidiske, their mother, had never put much stock in deities: if the gods were so set on killing her daughters, they should come do it in person, and look her in the eyes as they did. Yes, they were three mouths they hadn't planned on; yes, they needed more attention than the new clan could yet afford. But to not try? Unintended or not, the blame laid squarely on the shoulders of the parents, not the children - and they did not deserve to suffer for those mistakes. In the end, the decision was taken out of their hands. One night, Rukh fell asleep with her sisters at her side, warm and safe; when dawn broke, she was alone. All that remained was a scrap of paper with "We're sorry" written in shaky, childish letters. They hadn't even said goodbye. After that, the fighting stopped - but in some ways, that made it worse; at least they'd been talking. And now, just frosty silence and heated glares. Aunt Alhena and Grandma Sabik try to reconcile them, for Rukh's sake if nothing else, but nothing they can say could ever fix the pair's relationship. Rukh grows up as a reminder of her parents' failures, with two empty spaces on either side, and sometimes she wishes her sisters had trusted her enough to let her follow them. - She's doing better, these days. She still suffers from the occasional depressive episode, and she'll barely acknowledge her father when they cross paths, but it's better. She has close friends in the form of Oriana and Csaba, and her relationship with her mother is... maybe not solid, but positive. Their conversations rarely end in tears, these days. Rukh also finds solace in her colleagues in Admin. Perhaps too much solace. ...Perhaps it's one specific colleague. Alula is nominally a part of the Beastclans Outreach Organisation, but mostly what this means is that she and Rukh often end up coordinating efforts to get the right people in the right places at the right times. Rukh is very fond of her. She...really hopes the talonok is also a lesbian. And into dragons. And likes her. ...Rukh is a nervous and extremely gay wreck. (..........She really doesn't need to be worried about this.) |
