Biography
Chandra Male / Gay / PhD's: Chemistry Romantic partner: Vostok
Chandra is named for the Chandra X-ray Observatory, a NASA space telescope designed to provide specific and accurate information to the field of x-ray astronomy. Reader, since I don't know who you are, I'll start off with the basics. All light is, well, light. You can call it electromagnetic radiation as much as you want, but it's light. And it comes in a LOT of different wavelengths, much more, as I'm sure you know, than you can see. What makes this interesting is how light of different wavelengths interacts with matter; what it penetrates and what it doesn't penetrate, as well as what emits it. Thus, we need very different tools to look at different types of light, and what we find with those tools differs greatly from wavelength to wavelength. X-rays are above the ultraviolet spectrum of light. In other words, their energy level is so high that we can't see them. But this poses another problem: unlike lower-energy light frequencies, X-rays and gamma rays don't pass easily through the atmosphere, making them difficult to observe without spacecraft. This is where Chandra comes in. X-ray astronomy dates back to the 1920s, but until the 1960s, it was hindered by the atmosphere. In 1967, people begin developing x-ray telescopes specifically designed for spaceflight. (By this point, we've already had some pretty complex payloads; in ten years, humanity went from sending a beeping thing up in space to sending multiple humans, as well as various scientific instruments, to orbit the Earth. Exciting.) The first was called Uhuru. Chandra was proposed during the 1970s. If you've been following JWST's story, this is going to sound familiar. Essentially, it took a looooooooooong time to get Chandra ready for flight. Finally, the Chandra X-ray Observatory was launched in 1999 on Space Shuttle Columbia, which happened to be the only orbiter big enough to fit the 64-foot long telescope. Chandra's data has been success after success after success. It gained a place among the Great Observatories, the others being Spitzer the infrared space telescope and Hubble (which I'm sure you can at least infer collects visible light.) Chandra remains in operation to this date. |
Chandra was born to a wealthy family in the Starfall Aisles, who expected him to grow up to be an astronomer. Chandra, however, hated astronomy. He hated staying up, he hated the cold (even though let's be real, it doesn't get below 70 in Arcane, he's just a weakling), and he hated waiting for things to happen. So when he went to school, he went into chem, which annoyed his family a bunch, so they stopped paying for his university, unless he switched his major. But you see, Chandra is, uhh, there's no FR-friendly word for this. So to put it nicely, he's always been characterized by his stubbornness and the stick lodged permanently in his rear end, which makes him incapable of doing anything he doesn't want to do. So he stayed in chem and eventually became the guy who went "huh, yeah, let's use liquid hydrogen to shoot people into space." I mean ??? He also did a lot of work on airline fuel too, and he did his doctorate thesis on that, but then his husband went to work at this space agency and he was like eh, seems like a cool industry. So he went there too. He's a cool dude. Fun fact: He and his husband Vostok met while staying in the same apartment while doing their doctorate work. Vostok, ironically, was kind of the exact opposite of Chandra: a nocturnal poor guy from Wind who'd worked his whole life to be at a university in Arcane studying astronomy. But the two became really close friends and lovers because they're adorable. Another fun fact: His family are all homophobes, but they're even more mad that he moved to the Shifting Expanse than that he married a guy. Which Chandra loves, because he hates them back. :^) |
