Biography

Ragabash

Clan Trader | Privateer
—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–——–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—
Ragabash loved hiding in the shadows. The common joke among her friends was that she even hatched on a night with no moon. She always wanted to be a hunter. She had all the makings of a good one, too - dark coloring, good camouflage, excellent night-vision, and great instincts. The only problem was her runes. When she was calm, they weren't so bad, they'd barely illuminate her skin; nothing that would draw too much attention. When she was excited though, they'd flare brightly. She tried everything to keep it under control. She even tried meditating. Nothing worked though. Every time she got close to the prey she'd been tracking, without fail, her runes would light up like a beacon, startling her prey, alerting everyone in the forest to her position, and ruining her chances of a surprise attack. Ragabash could run her quarry into the ground, sure, but that wasn't her style and as time wore on it became more and more frustrating (though her friends sure got a kick out of "watching a deer get chased by a flashlight".)

Her runes did have one useful purpose. They made her excellent at finding things. If she was looking for something, they would point her in the direction she needed to go like the needle on a compass, pulsing brighter when she was facing the direction of the object of her interest. She could tell whenever they were acting as a divining rod, because they would get all tingly like a tangible manifestation of restless anticipation. She often used this skill to find lost toys or trinkets for the dragons in her clan. It was also this ability that finally led her away from her birth clan.

One night, after another failed hunting trip, knowing her exaltation date was approaching, she was sitting in the woods wishing she could find something that made her feel alive the way hunting did, but in which her bioluminescence wouldn't be a detriment. Her runes lit up and began pulsing with such a fervor that she couldn't ignore them. The full body tingling was so uncomfortable that she had to move and she began tearing through the woods as fast as she could. The pulsing got more and more intense, matching pace with her pounding heartbeat, until she finally burst through the woods and found herself on a sandy beach under a brilliant moon.

She balked at first. Having stayed hidden in the forest for most of her youth, she had never seen the ocean. Its openness made her feel so exposed, but it called to her like nothing else ever had. She cautiously stepped closer to the water, delighting in the feel of the waves lapping at her feet. She realized with sudden joy that the color of the moonlight on the sparkling waves, bordered by forest, was the same color as her runes. She bounded further into the water - and quickly realized that she had no idea how to swim. None at all. Her years of learning how to move with perfect grace through the dark forest had not prepared her at all for the way the ocean behaved and she splashed and floundered, clawing at the sand until she flopped back awkwardly onto the shore.

If swimming through the water was not the answer, then she figured sailing must be. She began fashioning herself a raft. Obviously she realized that she had no knowledge of how to sail, but she rationalized that she'd just have to figure it out as she went along. So it was with great pride that she pushed her makeshift raft into the sea and clambered atop it as it began to drift to open water. She had absolutely no idea where she was going to sail to, but she knew it would be towards her destiny, so she followed her runes and let them lead her wherever they wanted.

She found that she loved sailing. Nothing had ever made her feel so free. She acknowledged that she had much to learn, but despite being a bit rubbish at it, she was happier than she'd ever been. Night time was the best because she could lure fish with her glowing tail-tip and though everything was so open, she felt safe with the night sky blanketing her. Unfortunately, she was completely inexperienced at reading the sea and was caught off-guard when a storm came upon her just as she'd spotted land in the distance. It wrecked her raft and sent her spiraling down into the sea until she felt strong paws hauling her towards the surface.

Her rescuer was a tundra and he hauled her onto the shore. The sopping wet fluffball didn't have a name, having left his clan before he could be given one, but with his hair all plastered against his skin, she could tell that he was insanely scrawny. It turned out, he'd had some bad luck figuring out which plants were safe to eat in this land outside his birth clan, and had become a bit overly cautious as a result. Ragabash told him he looked like he'd been gnawing on bones, and she found her own joke so funny that the term, "Bonegnawer" stuck and became his name ("Bones" for short).

The two swapped stories and Ragabash discovered that her days on her makeshift raft had only managed to carry her north and into the Nature lands. Her runes seemed to want her to go into the woods though, so she agreed to accompany Bonegnawer on his quest to find a clan. The two of them found out that they made quite a good team when it came to finding things. He was an innately good scavenger and she had her compass-like runes to keep them on track. That did not keep them from getting lost in the woods, however. Both were insanely happy when they came upon a massive imperial who told them she'd take them to a clan where they could be happy, if they agreed to help her. The imperial was Gaia, a priestess of the Gladekeeper and protector of all things nature. She wanted to employ the two to be her assistants, protectors, and emissaries, and the two hungry tired misfits readily agreed. Thus, they were led to Tyna's clan.

Ragabash did much reading and researching on how to sail. She built herself a proper canoe, and when not running errands for Gaia, she acts as the clan's trader, sailing to distant lands and procuring interesting items. She quickly became adept at navigating, and she still felt more at home on the water than she'd ever felt anywhere else. She and Bonegnawer had several clutches of eggs together, though the two remained mainly close friends rather than anything definitively romantic. Ragabash's runes did eventually lead her to a more permanent mate, in the form of a terminally lost Pearlcatcher named Orion. He often accompanies her when she leaves on her trade routes and she loves his company and his highly inquisitive mind.

Ragabash is fond of humor, a bit of a lighthearted trickster, and always speaks her mind. She tries to diffuse arguments within her clan, and she has a habit of playing "devil's advocate" in any debate - often presenting a contrasting viewpoint simply to make sure others have considered it, rather than because she actually believes it. She loves playing with hatchlings and always finds herself challenging authority, though she has no desire to gain any authority or renown herself. She finally grew to love her runes, seeing them as invaluable in navigating. Gaia also helped her appreciate them from an aesthetic viewpoint. The Imperial told her that she had been "kissed by the moon" and the young mirror blushed harder than she ever had in her life.
