Twig, Part 1, Volume II
???

~

A young brown Spiral paced out in the hall. Twig had overheard Alyss speaking with and treating Pigeon, and he felt claws grip his heart. Twig waited for Alyss to give him any news on her condition, and soon, the doctor strode out of the room and gave Twig a sad smile.

“How is she?” Twig asked him.

“She’s feeling much better, now,” Alyss said.

But he always said that. “I just wanted to see her,” Twig replied, twitching his tail and widening his dark eyes with hope.

“Of course,” Alyss encouraged him. “I’m sure she wants to see you too, just remember to be careful.”

“I will, Dad.”

When Alyss walked down the hall, Twig darted into the room, heading straight for the other door leading to Pigeon’s room. The dark Spiral bore a big grin when his blue eyes met the silvery of the pied dragon lying in her bed.

“Twig!” Pigeon happily wheezed before erupting into another fit of coughing.

“Take it easy,” Twig cautioned, returning a smile.

“How’s your practicing going?”

“Great! The king has to let me join Bogatyr and the other guards someday.”

“Could I see some of your moves?” Pigeon wondered softly.

Twig glanced around her room uneasily. “I might break something in here, I’ll need more room...”

“Like...outside?”

Twig wasn’t surprised she’d asked. He and everydrake else knew how much Pigeon longed to go down to the beach instead of being stuck in her bed and being so sick all the time. And he also knew how Alyss would react if Pigeon wasn’t getting her rest, or if anything happened to worsen her condition.

“Please?” Pigeon begged, seeming to make her eyes appear larger. “We don’t have to go far, just by the shore.”

“I don’t know,” Twig hesitated. “Dad’ll be furious.”

“He won’t find out,” Pigeon pleaded. “And you can use your ninja stealth moves to get us out,” she added in a sneaky voice.

Twig hated when she did that, but he couldn’t stop the smile from spreading over his face. Pigeon grinned with him and struggled to stand, but Twig rushed forward to hold her steady. He suggested that he carry her, and Pigeon didn’t protest, for she was too thrilled. When Twig huffed, Pigeon glanced at him curiously.

“Am I too heavy?” she teased, gripping her purple mith doll before Twig hoisted her up.

No,” Twig puffed as Pigeon wrapped her tail loosely around him. “I am a warrior,” he wheezed, “saving my little sister from the demonic castle of doom!” Pigeon giggled and buried her face into his neck, and she was carried out into the immense hallway.

Twig traveled as steadily as he could so he wouldn’t drop Pigeon, and she didn’t mind, her heart racing with excitement as they passed and evaded everydrake in their path. Luckily, the guards at the front gates were Astraeus and Aerico, and all they ever did was bicker with each other about everything. Twig crouched low, leaning above Pigeon and easily sneaking past. As he darted ahead, he struggled against a growing wind.

“It’s so much more beautiful out here!” Pigeon marveled.

“I think another storm’s coming though,” Twig replied, eyeing the grey clouds over the Sea.

“We don’t have to be out long,” Pigeon pleaded.

Giving in, Twig raced carefully over the sand, startling some gulls into flight and stopped by a cluster of barnacled rocks. He gently set Pigeon down so she could sit on a long piece of driftwood wedged between the rocks.

“Thank you, Twig!” Pigeon lunged forward and wrapped her arms around him.

“Okay, okay!” Twig laughed. “I can’t show you my moves if you keep attacking me.” Pigeon hastily released her grip in him and squeezed her doll tighter, waiting for him to begin. Lowering his voice, Twig began. “This,” he started, peeking one dark eye from under his wide hat, “I like to call...” he trailed off before spinning three times and whipping his tail straight out, “the triple tornado tail twist!” he finished, landing in a triumphant pose.

Pigeon gripped her mith doll, giving him a big smile. “I hope they do make you a guard soon!” she wished him.

“They should,” Twig agreed. “Especially with my crushing wave kick!” he said as a little wave washed over his feet. He yelped in pain and he leaped into the air, kicking both feet out.

Pigeon covered her mouth with one paw and she saw a little crab go flying from Twig’s foot. It landed with a soft splat onto the sand before starting to scuttle away.

“Are you okay?” Pigeon asked him.

“Sure,” Twig answered, examining his sore toe. “That crab is now my sworn enemy,” he added, deepening his voice.

“He’s escaping!” Pigeon laughed, pointing one claw to the sand. The crab waddled away faster.

“I’ll save you!” Twig shouted over the rising wind, and darting after the crab. “He won’t get past my swirling undertow dive—”

“PIGEON!”

Pigeon froze and Twig faltered, landing on his face in the sand as the escaping crustacean hid away in a nearby rock pool. Pigeon turned her silver eyes to see another Spiral darting over to them as Twig lifted his head and brushed the sand from his face and hat, and he startled at the sight of the other dragon.

His large green eyes frantic, Alyss rushed towards them. “What in the name of Sornieth are you doing out here?!” he roared. “Especially when another storm’s coming!”

“I—” Pigeon started, her voice beginning to choke up. “I just—”

“Don’t you know how dangerous it is for you? How sick with worry we’ve been?”

Twig moved to stand between them. “Dad—it’s okay, I was with her the whole ti—”

“And as for you,” Alyss cut in. “You of all dragons should have known better than to take her out here. What if she grew worse?” When Twig was stunned into silence, Alyss turned his attention back to Pigeon. “I’m taking you back.”

Pigeon’s body shook and her eyes began to sting, threatening to spill tears. She begged Alyss to let her stay with Twig, but Alyss didn’t answer her cries. When he lifted her up, Pigeon’s pleas erupted into wailing as tears cascaded down her face and she shut her eyes tight.

Before Alyss turned around and carried her back to the castle, Twig thought he caught a glimpse of regret on his father’s face. He followed a short distance behind before he felt something plush under his foot. Glancing to the sand, he saw the purple shape of the mith doll and plucked it from the ground, brushing sand away before darting after them.

Both Alyss and Twig never spoke over Pigeon’s crying, and soon she stopped before they all reached the stone castle, for the effort exhausted her. Her eyes were still closed, and for a few moments they thought she’d fallen asleep already, but an occasional sniffle would break the silence. When the other dragons greeted them at the front gates, Pigeon opened her eyes but didn’t meet their gazes as they swarmed around her. More tears streamed down her cheeks when she recognized Ophelia’s voice.

“Where was she?!” the Guardian screeched.

“Down the beach with Twig,” Alyss told her softly.

Twig tried meeting his mother’s eyes. “I kept her safe—”

“We’ll talk about this later,” Ophelia snapped before stalking away.

When they reached Pigeon’s room, Twig once again found himself waiting outside as Alyss tucked Pigeon into her bed. He could hear them speaking and the booming of thunder, but he couldn’t tell what they were saying, nor did he know how for how long. When Alyss finally returned, Twig expected him to look angry or disappointed, but Alyss only gave him a curious expression.

“Pigeon told me that it was her idea for you to take her outside. Is this true?” he asked Twig.

The young brown Spiral didn’t know what to say for several moments, and he hung his head.

Alyss released a half-hearted chuckle. “Doesn’t surprise me.” He looked down to the object that Twig still held in his paws. “And I suspect it wasn’t just her doll she was upset about losing.”

Twig slowly nodded. “I just wanted to make her happy. I know how much she loves the Sea.”

“Everydrake wants her to be happy. But we also want what’s best for her,” Alyss added quietly. “She’s always been so weak, Twig, even since before your mother took her in. And if she works her body too hard...who knows what could happen?”

“I know,” Twig choked, his vision blurring. “But that was the happiest I’d ever seen her be...” he trailed off, dragging his free paw across his face.

Alyss pulled him close, embracing his son and hushing to him. “Even more than when I sewed her the doll?” he joked softly.

A small smile broke across Twig’s face. “I bet she’ll be happier to have it back.”

“We’ll both take it to her,” Alyss said, leading him inside.

Pigeon had nearly fallen asleep before they walked in, and she smiled big when Twig returned her mith doll. She thanked and apologized to them with more tears, but she ceased her crying when Twig and Alyss leaned down and hugged her gently.

“I guess I have to face Mom,” Twig said, slumping his shoulders. “She’s gonna kill me.”

“We’ll face her together,” Alyss smiled.

“But I’m a warrior, and a warrior can face dangers alone.”

“Even the best warriors need help. You can wait in the hall, I’ll be there soon,” he urged to him, and Twig trudged back out. Alyss checked on Pigeon’s blankets one last time and he went to follow Twig, but Pigeon’s soft voice halted him.

“I just wanted to be like you and Twig...and everydrake else,” she sniffled. “I thought that I’d feel like a normal dragon...and I’m just so tired of being like this,” she choked up.

“I’m so sorry, Pigeon,” Alyss’ voice soothed. “But I’m doing all that I can to help you get better.”

“I know...I’m sorry, too.”

“Alyss,” another voice caught the Spiral’s attention. Hollyberry, a red Nocturne she-drake, stood in the doorway with another smaller Spiral, Prosper, and he seemed to be cradling something in his arms.

Alyss turned back to Pigeon. “I’ll check on you again later. Get some sleep now.”

Pigeon’s eyelids fluttered as she watched Alyss leave and click the door shut behind him. Before she drifted off, the voices of the others and the cry of a baby dragon lulled her to sleep during the storm.
