BIO IN PROGRESS

Etymology: [an-a-rau] – free of shame

A child from a line of fey royalty and dark witchery... and yet, even though both sides are hidden from him, he has discovered a well of magic wild and fierce.

Truthfully, he had his doubts about the Sea from the beginning. Tāyoni had eyes and ears everywhere, after all, and the Ashfall Waste really wasn't so very far from the Tidelord's domain; there was no reason to believe she couldn't find them there.

Disgleirio was insistent, though. 'The Sea', she said, over and over. 'The Sea will save us.' He agreed in the end, just to prove he wasn't a stubborn, cowardly coral snake, but he still paused longer than she did before the plunge.

Anarawd was fire born, as his sister, and he couldn't help but imagine what could happen to him, once he was below the waves. Would he sizzle away, dissolving into nothingness? Would his magic shrivel up and die inside him, locked away forever as it hardened like cooled lava?

Disgleirio vanished beneath the surface with barely a ripple, sinking into the water as though she were born with it and - not for the first time - he envied her easy grace. Everything seemed to come easily to his sister: she was as elegant as their mother, as wise as their father. Her magic leaped to do her bidding when she called it, flowing around her like the wind itself.
She didn't let herself use it often for his sake, he knew. He envied her easy understanding, too; she was so much harder to read than he was, even though she wore her thoughts in her crest. Her mind was so much more complicated, so much faster: working on problems before he even knew they existed.

Sometimes he wondered why he stayed with her. The cruel, not-him voice in the back of his mind insisted, constantly, that she would be better off without him. That she would stand a better chance.

It piped up again as he stood on the mudflats, gazing out across the Sea, which seemed to stretch beyond the horizon and away into eternity before him.

"Are you coming?" Disgleirio called, from miles away it seemed, her magic a familiar brush against his consciousness. "It's so shiny down here! You need to see it."

Before he could think any more, before the Voice had a chance to reply, he took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and dived.

Steam and storm, but it was cold! For such a reputedly tropical place, he felt as though ice were encasing him on every side. He reached out, tentatively, with his magic and pulled it back so quickly it ached. That had been a mistake. Foolhardy at the best of times, with Tāyoni likely searching for them, but here, where there was no fire and spark to answer him? Practically stupid.

And no matter what the Voice told him, Anarawd was not stupid. He just wasn't smart.

He took a lot longer to adjust than Disgleirio did. His quick, curious sister had always adapted well to the strange twists and turns of their lives, and he did his best to keep up with her. They settled for a time in the Fishspine Reef, and for a while life was good. They played in the water, learning how to hunt in the cool water, the best shells for painting, and which coral was best for scratching itchy scales.

For all his reticence, Anarawd threw himself into his new life. He did his best to forget - his parents, the threat of Tāyoni's binding magic seeping over the world - and pretended he had never lived anywhere but the Reef. He found them a little cave, just big enough for the two of them, and tried not to think about anything but that day, that minute, that hour, that breath. It was hard, sometimes. Disgleirio liked to ruminate, to wonder aloud how their sister Derren might be faring, how she might have hidden herself.

Privately, selfishly, Anarawd hoped he never found out. His flighty, airy big sister would either vanish completely, using her magic carefully and wisely, or she would fling her talents about left and right, singing to her birds and drawing Tāyoni's spies in a matter of weeks.

Anarawd refused to admit that he was frightened of his abilities. "It's safer", he insisted when Disgleirio begged him to let his magic play with hers. "We can't risk her finding us". It was true, really. Probably. Their parents hadn't really told them what Tāyoni was capable of; in their warnings and fear, the Faery Queen had taken on the figure and power of a god. Omniscient, omnipotent, sadistic and cunning, despite his best efforts, the unseen form of Tāyoni haunted his every day and night. He clung to the fear like a raft, even when Disgleirio began to relax. She started using her magic, eventually, brushing aside his every argument with a roll of her eyes and a quick smile: "It's a just a watch-word. We can't keep up watch every night for the rest of our lives, Ana."

He disagreed. Every night, once Disgleirio settled down to sleep, he sat up to keep watch despite the watch-word stones. He rarely managed to stay awake all through the night, was usually asleep long before the sunlight filtered flickering down through the waves. Slowly, slowly, he began to relax.

Perhaps they were far enough away. Maybe Tayoni wasn't looking for them anymore; maybe Disgleirio's magic was subtle enough.

He started to smile when she cast her illusions on the seaweed, making them twist and dance like spirals. He stopped scolding her when she surrounded them in soft, flickering red light to help her sleep. And finally, he let himself drift to sleep while the moon was still high, trusting that she was right.

He never did have good timing.

That night, Disgleirio woke him with a screech of terror. One look at the shocked expression on her face, the quivering of her crest, and Anarawd knew their little piece of paradise was gone. They abandoned their cave in the Reef after he'd carefully obliterated every trace of them there. In his desperation, he risked using a little of his magic to burn away the watch stones, then shut it back inside himself.

By morning, they were miles away, drifting on the whim of the tide. Disgleirio was quieter, after that.
