Fortuna is more than just the matriarch; she is a dragon of immense magical prowess, capable of bending shadows to her will. It was her who first heard the whispers of the Shadowbinder, a call that only those attuned to the darkness can perceive. Her real gift, however, is a talent for bringing her clan together, keeping their spirits high during difficult chapters of struggle and heartache. Fortuna has gathered the misfits and outsiders from various corners of the world to form her clan. They are comprised of dragons of many different breeds, each bearing the weight of their pasts, ostracized by their birth clans for their unique abilities or eccentricities. She believes that through their unwavering devotion and mastery of shadows, her clan will be able commune with the Shadowbinder. With wisdom comes patience, and Fortuna possesses a remarkable reservoir of patience. This quality imbues her with a comforting, maternal aura that irresistibly attracts other dragons, especially those who've weathered challenging lives and seek solace. Yet, she isn't one to coddle; instead, she steers her loved ones through trials and tribulations, providing support and nurturing their self-belief. While she may have missed out on the typical developmental phases involving play with younger dragons, her self-compassion and hard-earned confidence have seen her through associated challenges. She's unbothered by the occasional awkwardness or her characteristic bluntness, for she knows herself and her intentions well. In many ways, she plays the role of a maternal figure and role model that she yearned for during her own upbringing. Nonetheless, her past occasionally returns to haunt her, causing her shadow magic to become unstable—with potentially terrifying consequences. Vivid nightmares, hallucinations, and a feeling of temporal entrapment can ensue. When it becomes severe, it can affect the entire clan. This is why she invests considerable effort in self-care, striving to prevent such occurrences as much as possible. Fortuna's early years were filled with uncertainty. Originally, she was an Arcane dragon, feared by her peers. Her powerful shadow magic, an enigmatic force passed down through her lineage, felt like a curse. She struggled to control it, fearing the potential harm it could bring to her world. She had been warned countless time of The Shade, how it wreaked havoc upon Sornieth during The First Age and--according to those around her--the Shadowbinder was to blame for it all. As she matured, Fortuna embarked on a journey of self-discovery. She sought wisdom from ancient tomes and spent countless nights reading under the guidance of a luminous moon. It was during these moments of reflection that she began to understand the necessity of balance in the world. Fortuna realized that her shadow magic was not a curse but a part of her essential nature. The world could not thrive in perpetual light; there must be shadow and darkness to bring equilibrium. Her power was not to be feared but embraced. One night, as she wandered amidst the towering trees of the Starwood Strand, a strange sensation washed over her. It was as though the very shadows whispered secrets to her, their inky tendrils beckoning her closer. In the midst of this surreal experience, a voice, soft and yet commanding, filled her mind. It was the voice of the Shadowbinder. The voice resonated through Fortuna's very soul, speaking of purpose and destiny. "Fortuna," it whispered, "you are not cursed, but chosen. Your power, born of shadows, is the key to maintaining balance in our world. Embrace the darkness within, for it is a force that, when wielded with wisdom and compassion, can heal as much as it can conceal."
