Biography
How there managed to be an ethereal bogsneak, the clan leaders couldn't figure out. Why he was in the lair was a greater mystery. Dragons rarely appeared without their say so, and certainly not towards the more permanent abodes. Yet there he was. Gwenora and Balthazar were busy with clan chores, and Mismar would not trust the task of questioning this new dragon to others. He, Ardath, and Carwyn therefore greeted the bogsneak themselves.
"Greetings!" chirped Carwyn, perched on one of Ardath's horns. The bogsneak turned his impassive gaze towards her, eyes glowing white under his cowl. He gave a small smile in greeting.
"How did you come to be here?" snapped Mismar.
"Do you not know?" asked the bogsneak, his voice soft and low. It wasn't a simple question, somehow. Mismar shook his head, trying to focus his mind-reading talents. The bogsneak's mind was like a placid lake. Mismar saw only his own thoughts and self-doubts reflected back at him. Startled for a moment, he sought out his guardian instincts. This dragon posed his charge no harm. How did he know that?
Ardath smiled warmly at the bogsneak. "You have a task here, don't you?"
The bogsneak blinked slowly in response. Clearly a yes. They weren't sure how they knew.
"Uh.... What is your task?" asked Carwyn.
"To keep vigil."
"Come again?" said Mismar.
"To keep vigil."
"With those going before?" said Ardath, tilting her head gently.
Another slow blink.
"Care to interpret?" snapped Mismar, staring incredulously at the massive Imperial.
"He intends to keep vigil with those who wish to keep the Earth Father company," said Carwyn. She gave a small confused chirrup. "How do I know that?"
"What on Sornieth qualifies you for that?" snapped Mismar, looking at who he perceived to be an interloper.
"I am of the lineage of the Gatekeeper," said the bogsneak. "Did you meet my great great great grandmother Naomi?"
"Not personally," said Mismar.
"Yes, yes, we did!" chirped Carwyn. "She was that little Fae who greeted us on the way out. She started working there long after we were exalted. She's the dragon who is able to hop back and forth between the deities' realm and ours. That's why she doesn't mind terribly that she hasn't eaten in a while."
"Well... That's something, at least?" said Mismar, looking doubtfully at both fae and bogsneak. "What is your name?"
The bogsneak stared blankly at him.
"We'll call you Vigil, then."
He smiled and gave another tiny nod.
