Lucian glanced at Paradise. The Priestess was right. The Shadowbinder had to be angry that a wind dragon just took over her clan like he owned it. That had to be why the Beastclans kept getting past their defenses. They needed a dragon to remind the clan that the Shadow element ran through their blood. “So what am I supposed to do?” he snapped irritably. “I think your best bet might be to go to the altar and beg Shadowbinder to accept this clan even though a Wind born dragon leads it,” Paradise shrugged a bit, even despite the fact that Lucian knew quite well that she was sure of herself. “After all, you just need to find a way to embrace the shadows. Then her majesty will bring us pure water again.” Lucian glanced to the Black River. It was filthy, and even Chlorine couldn’t seem to clean it. The Shadowbinder had to be furious. The king did not practice humility. He was too strong and proud. But he knew that his clan would be destroyed and his power lost if clean water and safe borders were not part of their standards. He needed to fix this. He dismissed Paradise with a wave of his hand and strode over to the altar, where he bowed low to the ground. He bowed to no one, but even Lucian knew that a deity was not a good enemy to have. He laid his head almost on the base of the altar, squeezing his eyes shut as he began his prayer. “Your dark majesty,” he whispered. “This clan is forever at your service. I ask for only one thing in return. The protection of this clan. If your anger is toward me as a leader, then punish me for whatever crimes I commit. Do not punish those who follow me, for they have no choice. I beg of you, give us an omen. A sign. Something to help us.” No sooner did the last word leave his mouth than Lucifer, his son, rushed in. His eyes were wide and his ear fins were lopsided. Lucian looked down at him with curiosity and sternness in his eyes. “What is it, son?” Lucian towered over his boy. Lucifer nodded at the cave entrance, watching silently as Lucian bounded out, his eyes trained on whatever laid beyond. Lying just outside the cave was a tiny baby Nocturne. She was covered in dark goop, and it strung from her mouth to the ground. She looked up at Lucian with shock and fear displayed clearly on her little face. “And who are you?” Lucian demanded loudly. She yelped and scampered into the arms of Lily, who set her calmly on her shoulder and glared at Lucian. “This is a baby, Lucian. I’m willing to bet she can’t even form a proper word, yet, can you, sweetie?” The Noc cooed and held onto Lily. Lily grinned. “I can take care of her, Lucian. I’ll protect her and teach her everything she could possibly need to know. Plus, look at her. Who does she remind you of?” Lucian, curious as to what the hell Lily meant, took a good long look at the Nocturne for the first time. She was a solid purplish color, with brighter wings and a gloomy underbelly. The goo around her mouth had almost melted off, and her eyes had a bright purple glow. Come to think of it… “Shadowbinder,” Lucian whispered. “Shadowbinder has given us her own daughter. I have to talk to Paradise.” He swiped the Noc before Lily could protest, swinging her onto his back instead. He went to Paradise and told her his theory. The Shadowbinder had sent her own daughter to live with Clan Vokun. Paradise smirked before dismissing the idea. “The Shadowbinder would do no such thing. I believe that this little Nocturne is a gift. A gift to help us remember what this clan stands for. What we stand for.” Lucian looked down. “So she’s our responsibility now?” Paradise grinned. “Actually,” she stuffed the child back into Lucian’s arms. “She’s your responsibility now.” |
