"There's nothing so drab I can't make fab." The envoy Eztli had traveled to the Scarred Wasteland to set up a trade agreement with another clan. While waiting to speak with the clan head, checking the magical wards he had in place so as not to catch any of the strange diseases rampant in the plague lands, he noticed a rainbow-hued pearlcatcher staring at him critically. "Festering Plaguebringer, doesn't anyone in your clan have enough fashion sense to tell you that those patterns on your hide are sooooo last season?" said the pearlcatcher. The usually eloquent coatl was at a lost for words. He knew his speckled, freckled, crackled appearance wasn't the prettiest in all of Sornieth, but he liked himself just fine. "Err," he stammered, though he was saved from further response by being called into the meeting. When he emerged, his mind was preoccupied with trades and networks and connections, so he forgot about the judgmental dragon until his mate Winternight told him that a rather bright young pearlcatcher from the Scarred Wasteland was building a salon right next to the apparel shop where Winter worked as a tailor. Ez felt a sudden onset of dread in the pit of his stomach. "Don't ever let him tell you you're not beautiful just the way you are," he blurted. He had good cause to worry, for his mate had suffered from bouts of low self-esteem in the past. Ez had entirely misread the pearlcatcher's intentions, however - he merely wants every dragon to be as beautiful as they can, to instill self-confidence in them as they finally express their true colors and selves. With cosmetics and a little bit of magic, Skah can do nearly anything in his salon - he trims and styles manes and fur, polishes scales and horns, files claws, and paints, dyes, and accessorizes until he and his customer are satisfied. Though the ingredients for such potions are expensive and hard to come by, he has even been known to permanently alter a dragon's appearance, to change the very patterns on their hide, the colors on their scales and wings, and even, occasionally, their breed. When Skah encountered Ez, he had been wanting to relocate for a while. The pearlcatcher has a very sensitive nose and can't stand foul odors, so living in plague territory was problematic for him. He had compensated by learning to make a wide variety of perfumes to hide the scent of his homeland, but meeting the coatl peaked his interest and reignited his desire to travel someplace fresher. Besides, he had already made over every dragon in his home clan. It was time for new challenges, so he used his savings to construct a luxurious salon next to an apparel shop in the town of Lantern Port. As he had expected from the state of the clan's leader, most of the dragons of Lantern Port and the nearby island of Prufrock were in dreadful need of makeovers, more concerned with books than looks. Many resisted his attempts to update their appearance, and he didn't pressure them - he only wanted to work with others to affect changes they wished to see but didn't know how to create for themselves. One of his greatest early successes was with the coatl Jinx, who was convinced that his dull wings indicated that he was cursed with ill fortune. Skah showed him that his wings need not remain dull, and he painted beautiful, bright patterns on them, revolutionizing Jinx's perception of himself. Though he'll work with dragons with any color scheme, he personally adores bright, flashy, zesty colors, though he takes care not to allow them to clash. The spiral Galin was quick to befriend him, not only for the personal benefits but also because he was thrilled to have another dragon around who enjoyed makeovers, matchmaking, and gossip as much as he did. The stylish weaver Eugene, who works in the apparel shop next door to the salon, was also delighted to make another pearlcatcher friend and often contributes new apparel to Skah's salon so that his customers can try out different styles to see which best suits them. He never intended to hire any employees, but when he saw the beautiful designs that Kouta was capable of painting on himself and other dragons, he decided it was better to have an underling than a rival and convinced the wildclaw to work in his salon. Skah usually uses masculine pronouns, but he places no importance on his personal gender identity, considering gender a minuscule part of who he is. He feels the same way about his sexuality, seeking a compatible personality (and, admittedly, an attractive appearance) in a prospective partner before taking note of their gender. |
