━━ • • • ━━ THE TREES WATCH ━━ • • • ━━

Step softly.

Keep your voice low.

Don’t let it know, don’t let it hear. Duck away from its eyes,

The forest can sense your fear.

━━ • • • ━━ HISTORY ━━ • • • ━━

The Whispering Forest is an enchanted place. A place of spirits, and gods, and dangerous creatures that stalk the night. A place, of constant change; it never seems to remain the same for long as its trees and hills shift.

A place, that once one sets foot within the treeline,

They can never leave.

━━ • • • ━━

Long ago, two lost dragons found each other deep within the maze that was the enchanted forest.

They were afraid, but in each other they found safety, and comfort.

They were called Izan, and Ellipsis. Together, they trekked on until finding a small cave set into a cliffside. It was there, that they chose to settle.

Together, they found others like them—those who had lost themselves within the forest, or had been born within and could no longer find their way home. They started small, working together to dig out the caves to make them larger with each dragon they took in.

Those who joined tended to hold onto things, collect objects that were important to them.

Soon, they began to call themselves a clan.

Soon, outsiders deemed them “The Collectors,” and the clan decided to embrace the name.
━━ • • • ━━

The Collectors grew, and grew. Travelers found them to be welcoming, and willing to lend a nest for the night; traders found them eager to see their wares as they passed through, and happy to offer items, crafts, work, in return for something they couldn’t so easily get for themselves. Those who were lost, found themselves being offered a place to call home, while those who wished not to stay were sent on their way with food and a story to tell.

The clan became well-known within the Forest’s cursed mazes of trees.

They would quickly learn this was both a blessing, and a curse,

For while other dragons could find them for help, so too could the Forest’s spirits to attempt to strike them down.

Embra’s protective magic was tested to its limit,

Mao’s combat prowess to exhaustion,

Kaiju’s healing capabilities down to his last salves,

but they kept their heads high and did their best to survive.

Even as Ellipsis disappeared into the trees, claimed by the Forest to become a wanderer,

even as Izan fled after her to bring her back, never to be seen again,

even as more of their young hatched spirit-touched and the Forest whispered to them to follow,

the Collectors remained.

Darklight and Valor stepped in to fill the void in leadership, Embra took on apprentices to make their magic barriers that much stronger, the clan continued to stand strong.

A tale with a shaky beginning,

and an end that seems to near only to teeter off out of sight once more.

A story far from over.

━━ • • • ━━ CLASSIFICATIONS ━━ • • • ━━

Energy Manifestations
“Spirits”
General entities, often referred to as "spirits." the forest creates them to fulfill certain tasks. They come in many appearances, though dragon-like is common.

━━

True Spirits
Dragons (or other creatures) that have died within the forest, and now their spirits wander. true spirits come in different "strengths," and the older ones can often pass as dragons or other sentient creatures and interact with things with little difficulty. many of them have no memories of their lives.

━━

Angels
“Guardians” / “Guardian Spirits”
Not angel in the biblical sense, but rather guardians of various things. angels are tasked with a singular thing (or group of related things) to guard with their lives. they're often referred to as guardians instead.

━━

Deities
Various gods. Some are more powerful (or prominent) than others. Most don’t interact with dragonkind, though there are exceptions.

━━

Claimed
Sentient beings who have had their identities claimed by the forest. Claimed may trick others into going dangerous places, vandalize certain types of structures, etc. depending on what the forest required at the time of claiming them. The souls of claimed become part of the Forest, leaving the body to follow the Forest’s will with no sense of self or morality.

━━

Half-Claimed
Those who have lost part of their soul to the forest, but weren't completely lost; be it from outside intervention, escaping, or making a deal with only part of their soul as payment, for some examples. A half-claimed can show this status in physical ways, such as parts of their bodies being rotted, unnatural eyes, or altered voices and/or anatomy.

━━

Wanderers
Often claimed, though not all wanderers are. They're like reapers, finding and stealing souls and identities for the forest. Wanderers who were once dragons oftentimes are claimed dragons who became lost within themselves and began to unknowingly serve the forest.

━━

Spirit-Touched
Those with unusual qualities that can't be explained away by genetics or mutations. It's believed their birth/hatching coincided with a spike in the forest's energies in the area, resulting in children with such qualities. Special eyes—often “primal” eyes— are a common sign of a hatchling being spirit-touched, though the eyes can sometimes be the only trait of a spirit-touched. Other signs may be the ability to understand any spoken language, to read the trees, elemental magic physically manifesting itself on the body, and more.

━━

Amalgamations
Dragons or other sentients who have had their souls fused with that of another creature or sentient. Some take on traits of both/all parts of the original souls, while some have the ability to shift between the original forms of their combined souls. Amalgamations are often the work of magic, and/or wanderers attempting to shape them to the Forest’s desire; they often become wanderers themselves in the second case.

━━

Wardens
Living statues, brought to life by various means—sometimes spirit possession, magic, or other means. They often guard entrances to places the Forest doesn't want dragons to enter—though some wardens are benevolent toward dragons, suggesting that not all are a result of the Forest's energy and are separate from it.

━━

Watchers
Various types of flora that's more alive than it should be. They serve as the forest's eyes and ears. Mushrooms and flowering bushes are the most common types of watchers.
