A BROKEN VESSEL

AMBITIOUS | CYNICAL | ICONOCLASTIC

Main Theme: Kill Our Way To Heaven

qqNKHFz.png

She’d obtained the shell of a dragon, a broken, empty, body devoid of consciousness and soul.

There’d been traveler's tales of this sort- that some eggs, when hatched, were just not right- eggs that were slick with the blood of your enemies, eggs so old that fossils had cemented onto their surfaces, eggs found in the carcasses of monsters. It was known within Sosthenes circle of contacts that if you were willing to travel to some of the seedier markets of Sornieth, there were some up for sale.

She chose a body with dark skin and pale wings, visualizing the transformation she would make. Yes, she’d want the form to be the same- she needed the energy sensors of a skydancer, the graceful limbs and elegant flight. It would be expensive, but worth it. What else...? She’d like the patterning on the skin to be the same, so that meant brewing and buying gene scrolls. The ancient books she had received via...alternative...means detailed the steps and ingredients she had to obtain. And she needed far more than just a body, but for now, it was perfect.

Towards the end, it was difficult. Painful, even. She had to wrap her face in cloth to shield it from the glaring light, carry herbs with her to ease her coughing fits. The mixture of Emperor’s blood and wild magic she’d injected into herself would prepare her body to be a channel for tremendous power...at a cost.

Sosthenes, she knew, would willingly give up his life to create this for her. But she couldn’t trust a someone else to do this correctly, and with perfect precision- besides, loyal liegemen were hard to come by as it was. She brushed off their concerns, and prepared her new body- rewiring the nerves and operating on inner workings as necessary. She found the perfect chamber for the job- a tiny, hidden sinkhole which Sosthenes sealed over with stone, the entrance a small, unnoticeable hole that would also be closed up after she was done. She took two hours to carve in the sigils, making sure every rune was perfect. They transported her new body there in secret.

She was ready. Sosthenes and Lenore exchanged tense glances as she told them so. They prepared her last meal, a light salad of sugary prickleaf. She ate without comment, idly wondering what would happen if her plan failed. It was too late to back out now, and she had confidence in herself. It would be fine. It had to be.

She went alone, and forbade Sosthenes and Lenore from following.

Placing herself into the silent chamber, she drew upon the magic in her blood, forced a tiny rip in the magical vessel of the Garden. The magic flowed slowly at first, but as the minutes passed, more and more power rushed out, through her body and into the runes. They began to glow, brighter and brighter until her closed eyes ached at the light. She ignored it, and recited the necessary scripture. Everything blurred into dizzying whorls of light, darkness, sound, heat, cold, wrath, hatred, shock, and pain.

One moment, the peninsula of Clan Quinine was there.

The next, it ceased to exist.

Then, she dies.

But she is reborn.
