━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━«

She loved her sons so much. So very much, yet she could not bear the sight of them anymore. Not after all this. Not after bringing down the sword on their father’s neck. Not after putting their sister’s tattered corpse to rest. Naive. So naive, how could she have expected to be a good mother?

So she pushes her boys, the apples of her eyes, towards her brother. Crooked and hurting so badly, he could use the support, the distraction. The unconditional love. She knew Ahlrada hungered for this. This would help them all.

Her own was no leading example. Gods no, Sphinx loved nothing but the young man she had taken under her wing, long before even thinking about having her own children. Her own flesh and blood, cast aside, just like her father.

Her father. Lachris. She named one of her sons after him, because they shared the same...they shared nothing. Her Lachris was soft and he knew how to love, even if it came back to haunt him eventually. But it’s all jumbled and messed up.

In the beginning, there was coldness. Their home, their rooms, even to their toys would it cling, they shivered and huddled together, but no blanket in the world could help against emotional coldness. And because she could see the weakness, the softness their parents lacked in her brother, even as a child, especially as a child, she took it upon herself to make things better for him.

They grew up and she took up the mantle of caring. She raised her brother and herself, while her mother fawned over Ishaq, she fed the two of them, did school work with her brother while their father chased after anything vaguely female. If her parents did one thing well, it was to teach her how not to do it. How to be better. And she tried so very hard. Iredari wasn’t even surprised when it ended in bloodshed, patricide and murder. So heartbreaking that, in the end it was Ahlrada’s soul that was stained in father’s blood. She tried very hard to care. But her father had been dead to her ever since he first forgot about them after school.

When a Lord from a very distant patch of land came to Ouroboros, she thought this was her one chance. To get out of this pit of vipers. To get the idyllic, peaceful life of how things should be. A small castle, some land to govern as a proper Lady, some small children running around their feet while they looked down fondly. It was the dream.

And then her daughter died. She was dead. Dead. Gone like her father, like the half siblings she had never met before. And something old, something cold and long buried woke within her and it burned with iciness, turned her blood into liquid coldness. And for once in her life, her mother proved to be useful, just a thrown away comment on how Aster had been missing the evening of Amoha’s death. It was everything needed to make Iredari obsess over finding it, the missing evidence. And she did.

She found letters, plans, writing, even the weapon used to kill her sweet daughter. And the iciness within her veins clogged her mind, veiled her eyes, her judgement. She made it a spectacle. Aster’s begging, his pleas for innocence and declarations of love falling onto deaf ears as she dragged it all out into the public eye and when she was done, there was blood on her hands, her sword and even her cheeks. Her mate...the Lord would never return to his idyllic little castle between powdery snow and ice flowers.

Iredari does not feel regret. She avenged her daughter’s death. Her murder. So why was it so hard to look at her sons anymore?
