Biography

  • Senior Combat Mage

No one knows how Yahev found his clan.

While Jori was able to use the longneck network to track down his birth clan later in his life, no one has any idea how a tiny Tundra hatchling managed to get all the way from the Viridian Labyrinth to the Zephyr Steppes, shivering and soaking wet in the biting wind.

It was Radec who heard him first, squeaking desperately outside the lair as he tried and failed to climb the steppes to get to the warm light he could see inside the cave. The heat-vision of Mirrors saved his life that night; even with it, Yahev's body temperature was so low that Radec barely found him. Deeply alarmed by the state of the filthy, ice-cold ball of fur, he immediately picked the pup up by the scruff, carried him inside and set about grooming his fur to get him dry. Adecia's massive warm side and Jori's washcloths and hot water were ultimately more helpful, but Radec's immediate protective concern was no less welcome because of it. Some roots and other filling plant material was quickly grabbed from the stores while Jori set about brushing the dirty knots out of the little infant's fur. By the time she finished and they could actually see his thick coral-on-chocolate fluff, teeny Yahev was sound asleep.

They learned more about him (though not much) when he woke up the next day; he was gentle, sweet-natured and helpful, and fawned over the eggs tucked safely into grooves just outside the lair, often falling asleep in the nesting grounds themselves and having to be carried inside so the eggs wouldn't overheat from his warmth. He was no less a devoted big brother when the eggs hatched, letting the new babies climb over him and take naps in his mane. It was at that age when Radec and Adecia determined he was old enough to learn to hunt, and began teaching him. While Adecia didn't fight with magic and Radec's lashing wind attacks were fueled almost entirely physically, Yahev's quiet, determined casting quickly made him invaluable on a hunt, and in time as he matured would make him the clan's senior combat mage and official guardian of the Reach nursery.

He still managed to make time to talk to Talia, a lovely lavender-grey Spiral from a nearby flock, who sometimes fell asleep wound around the pile of sapling tree trunks Yahev had arranged inside the lair for precisely that purpose. Shy and quiet, Yahev was always nervous around the more energetic dragon, but Talia liked to wiggle and curl up in his fur and was always careful to take two whole breaths every so often so that Yahev would have a chance to speak. Their romance was brief--they were very different dragons--but while it hurt them to end it they were very honest with each other and remained friends until she left the Reach in the company of her new mate, Francis.

Several months after Talia moved her burrowing sticks into her own portion of the cave, Yahev's world changed when he met Sasha. The gorgeous, thick-furred Tundra was met by accident while he was out hunting with his parents, and Yahev was struck immediately by her gentleness, and the kindness of her scent. They soon discovered the kind of real, all-encompassing love he'd never shared with Talia, and expanded Yahev's warm, snug alcove into an equally homey but larger and airier den. Their favorite thing to do is lie together in the threshold, looking out over their shared favorite place: the Clan nesting grounds.
